The Boys S3 delightfully disgusting trailer was bonkers, with also a… classic musical number?
The Boys’ Season 3 trailer dropped at the SXSW panel in all its gory, bone-crunching glory, and it held nothing back. Like nothing.
How delicious.
The Boys try to even the odds.
The big takeaway is that it looks like The Boys have decided to kick things up a notch by tampering with the effects of Compound V themselves. It’s Hughie (Jack Quaid) who takes the substance of the supe-granting powers in the comics, but it seems that the special extra boost is granted to Butcher (Karl Urban) instead, who gains eye laser-cutting abilities similar to Homelander.
The two enemies will likely deal with each other on a level playing field, which from the looks of things, has Homelander feeling even more homicidal than usual. With the trailer beginning with Homelander and Butcher (“I’m in the bathroom looking at me, face in the mirror is all I need”) and almost ending just the same, it’s clear that the two are heading for a massive showdown. (Also loved the Imagine Dragons’ “Bones” song here, just perfect.)
Hughie not only seemingly doesn’t get the Compound V powers, but he’s continuing to be the recipient of much of the gore. Hey, at least the show’s consistent.
New faces: welcome to the bloody mess!
Ever since it was announced that Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles was joining the show as Soldier Boy—one of the first Compound V test subjects—the excitement has been brewing. Well, we finally get a glimpse of what this Captain America type character will be like on The Boys, with plenty of flashback scenes of him fighting WWII Nazis. As the oldest supe around, we will see modern-day Soldier Boy emerge in our time, shown in the trailer’s conclusion.
We’re also introduced to an impressive Crimson Countess (The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden, hopefully, she’s way less annoying here)—an imitation Scarlet Witch—who seems eager enough to enter the gore foray. She looks like she fits right in.
(I’m also really looking forward to seeing Sean Patrick Flannery’s Gunpowder.)
A musical number? In The Boys?!
When they say the show is unpredictable, they mean it. But I don’t think anyone was expecting the classic musical interlude with Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Frenchie (Tomer Kapon), which showrunner Eric Kripke described as “a breath of fresh air” in a sit-down interview with the cast at the Vanity Fair SXSW studio.
“All I’ll say is that it’s a classic Hollywood number,” he said.
It looks utterly tame, and absolutely… charming! Why is no one else talking about this?! If there are two characters who need a love duet, it’s Kimiko and Frenchie, and I can’t wait to see how this transpires.
Other tidbits
What made me laugh out loud was the Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad parody featuring A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), who stops a protest by peacefully sharing his own branded drink, “Turbo Rush.” This kind of ridicule is what The Boys does best.
Homelander (Antony Starr) milking a cow. The guy. Has. Issues.
The Deep’s no longer part of The Seven, but we can always count on Chace Crawford for gleefully cringe moments, like his singing to his gills last season. The S3 Boys trailer treats us to intense sex by The Deep while focusing on a starfish. Hey, whatever works, right?
There’s also an American Hero competition to select new supes, and the clip shows us A-Train busting out some smooth moves.
There are also a lot of exploding heads. Like, a lot.
And an American flag… sex toy (inspired by Homelander, of course)—I kid you not. There is nothing left unsaid on this show.
Um, there’s a season 4 already?
Now that we’ve gotten our (unexploded) heads around that insane trailer, let’s digest the other news that unearthed during that Vanity Fair interview that featured Karl Urban. Season 4 has been greenlit! Despite there being no official announcement from Amazon, Urban let the secret out of the bag during the interview when he was asked if he would jump on board for a fourth Star Trek film (also keeping my fingers crossed for that one).
“I’m shooting The Boys through the end of the year,” Urban said during the interview.
So there you have it. Season 4 of The Boys will be filming later this year. Season 3 of The Boys debuts on Amazon Prime Video on June 3. Expect anything.
