The 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show will be home to hip-hop heavyweights that include Eminem, Snoop Dog, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. The February 13 performance will take place live from SoFi Stadium. The COVID-19 pandemic had put its future up in the air but now will honor hip-hop music and stars that came out of the LA music scene. With Mary J. Blige being the only female taking part in the performance, however, it shows how women continue to play a critical role at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Super Bowl Halftime Show performances of the past

Where would hip-hop be without Mary J. Blige? Her music has always been a mix of R&B and hip-hop transcending the world with hits like “Be Without You” and “What’s the 411?” And her career has lasted years. Because of that, her place at the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show has been rightfully earned just like many of the previous female performers who have left monumental performances.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s 2021 halftime performance at the Super Bowl came at the start of the pandemic and at a time when the political climate continued to be at a divide. Although Jennifer had expressed interest in performing at the halftime show since 2019, the timing could not have been ever more perfect. With the Super Bowl taking place in Miami, Florida where there is much Latin pride, the women also had a big responsibility on their shoulders. Regardless, the women did not disappoint! Their performance went on to become the most viewed half-time show on Youtube.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s 2015 halftime performance came at the height of her career! Not only did she perform hits like “Teenage Dream” and “California Girls”, but the viewership during the halftime performance was also higher than the actual game itself. The Guinness Book of World Records reports a viewership of approximately 118.5 million viewers. With a meme attached to it from one of her backup dancers, it was a monumental performance that lives on to this day.
