Warning: This post contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches Season 3, Episode 3.

The third and final season of A Discovery of Witches is almost halfway over, and for the first time in the series, Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana (Teresa Palmer) remain separated throughout the entire episode. That’s because Matthew has gone to New Orleans with Marcus (Edward Bluemel) and Jack (Toby Regbo) in an attempt to gain support from Marcus’ family to form a scion.

To get the New Orleans vampires on board, Matthew needed Ransome’s approval. Ransome was sired by Marcus, and his mate was killed by Matthew. So he didn’t have any love for the de Clermont’s. Even though Matthew had killed hundreds of blood-raged vampires because of his father, Phillipe’s, edict, he was still to blame for deaths.

Matthew’s meeting with Ransome took a heavy toll on Matthew as he began to share the details of each and every vampire he’d murdered over two centuries ago. Ransome told him if he left even one person out, he’d kill Matthew. It wasn’t fear in Matthew’s voice when he began talking but resoluteness and exhaustion. Having had to carry around the memories of the vampires he killed for so many years had drained him. And he’d never forgotten even one of their names.

After Matthew ended the litany of names and details of their deaths, Ransome agreed that he and the other vampires would join the scion, and they shook hands. All Ransome wanted was an acknowledgment of the people, the family, that had been killed. He wanted proof that their lives had mattered, and Matthew gave that to him by sharing that, though he had taken their lives, he’d never forgotten them. And he regretted the choices he’d made two hundred years before.

Matthew’s atonement continued when he apologized to Marcus, something which Marcus never expected. By describing each and every aspect of how he’d killed the vampires, Matthew had opened the door to forgiveness, something his father wanted for him for a very, long time.
