William Shatner is channeling his Captain Kirk with a trip to space.  At just 90 years old, he will become the oldest astronaut to visit the intergalactic universe.  For the Trekkies, it’s a dream come true.

Former Amazon CEO and Star Trek fan, Jeff Bezos has invited Shatner to come along with his space travel company, Blue Origin, and is set to shuttle off on October 12th.  Joining Shatner on the ride will be Blue Origins Vice President of Mission and Flight Operations, Audrey Powers.  For one who has portrayed a fictitious space captain over the course of many decades, Shatner is finally going to see what real space is all about.

While he has been gifted with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (as he should), the actor further elaborated on what he expects to experience when exploring the stars and other unimaginable skyscapes in an interview with the Today Show.

"“I’m going to see the vastness of space and the extraordinary miracle of our Earth and how fragile it is compared to the forces at work in the universe,” he mused. “That’s really what I’m looking for.”"

With Powers, (it’s unclear whether Bezos is going) William will be seated on the New Shepherd rocket.  Earlier this year, the rocket took its first voyage with Bezos, which received lots of media coverage.

Aside from his iconic Captain Kirk role on Star Trek and his legendary companionship with Mr. Sprock (the late Leonard Nemoy), Shatner has an onscreen credit list that spanned more than six decades and is still going strong.  In the 1980s, he played Sargeant TJ Hooker, in TJ Hooker, and hosted the emergency doc, Rescue 911 shortly after.  Currently, Shatner can be seen as the host and exec producer of the paranormal series, The UnXplained, which is shown on the History Channel.
