It’s official: Casey McQuiston’s best-selling romance novel Red, White & Royal Blue is getting a film adaptation! Tony-winning playwright Matthew López will make his directorial debut with the feature film, bringing McQuiston’s LGBTQ+ romance to life on the big screen.

López, who recently won a Tony Award for Best Play for his work on The Inheritance — the first Latiné playwright to take home that honor — also helped pen the script for the upcoming rom-com. Per Variety, he rewrote the original, which was written by Ted Malawer.

McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue follows a forbidden, hate-to-love romance between the son of America’s first woman president and the prince of England. Judging by the official synopsis shared with Variety, the film will follow the original story closely:

"“What happens when America’s Prince falls in love with an actual prince? The film follows Alex Claremont-Diaz who, upon his mother’s election as president, was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, brilliant―his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There’s only one problem: Alex has a long-running feud with his royal counterpart across the pond.”"

Readers know that feud evolves into much more as the novel continues. However, the public perception of a relationship between two countries’ golden children threatens to upend any future between Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry. The logline concludes:

"“What at first begins as a fake, Instagram-able friendship grows into something more meaningful than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could complicate his mother’s re-election campaign, upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all?”"

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti/Schechter Films will serve as producers for the adaptation, which hails from Amazon Studios. Michael McGrath will executive produce alongside López.

A release date is still up in the air, as is casting for the upcoming film. Stay tuned for more information on both fronts. We’ll be eagerly awaiting more news.
