New Girl, was a hit show that debuted on FOX exactly ten years ago today. The Emmy nominated series pushed the comedy actress Zooey Deschanel into stardom and gave the world a modern look into a male friendship with a female figure thrown into the mix. After seven successful seasons,  the friendship of Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris) also gave FOX one of its most successful shows. Ten years later, here is why we still love New Girl.

The relationship between the male characters made the storylines .

Every male stereotype was broken down in this show. Sure, Zooey, or Jessica Day, the quirky teacher who ended up falling in love with Nick Miller and creating one of the show’s main storylines was a typical comedy arc. But New Girl proved every machismo characteristic wrong. We had Schmidt who loved the finer things in life and is a male model. When he met Cici (Hannah Simone), Zooey’s best friend,  the show focused on how he will do anything for her love.

Winston was the more vulnerable of the trio, and throughout the friendship,  helped Nick break down his “traditional male character”.  Although we did not see their relationship growing up, fans saw that they were not afraid to have heartfelt conversations and face issues head on. It allowed the men to have feelings and molded a new look for men friendships on television.

Here is a scene from the show:

The female lead was not afraid to be herself (or the ‘new girl’).

Although it never won the big awards, the show had a lot going for it. Apart from the great actors, it had great writing. The female lead was not afraid to be herself and stole the heart of Nick for that very reason. The aspects that most often drive shows like looks, were not part of her character. She was the girl you loved for being her.

Although the cast has not ruled out the potential for a reunion special, there has not been an announcement for one as of yet. What do you think though? Would you watch a reunion? Or do you think season seven closed off all the storylines perfectly? What would happen in the new season? Sound off in the comments. We would love to know.
