The leaves are about to change and the music we’ve been waiting for is finally almost here. While most might guess Taylor Swift, we’re talking about another country crossover crooner and that’s Kacey Musgraves. Three years after the release of her incredibly beloved “Golden Hour,” Kacey Musgraves is back with a new album to release in Fall 2021.

For those who don’t know, Kacey Musgraves has had a pretty similar journey to Taylor Swift with a few key differences. Both of them began their careers in country music before eventually making more mainstream pop/alternative music. The two were widely beloved by fans outside of their original genres and both have had a tremendous amount of success since beginning their careers.

Musgraves’ release of “Golden Hour” in 2018 capitulated her to mainstream fame and she hasn’t looked back since. Released as her fourth studio album, it featured 13 tracks and despite a lack of radio play, the album went on to be her most successful. Considering she won a few Grammys for just that album, it’s clear fans have been clamoring for Musgraves to release something new.

Finally, after over three years of waiting, we are finally getting a new album from Miss Musgraves and that’s “star-crossed.” Currently, the titular song is released but we’ll have to wait until September 10th to listen to the rest of the tracklist. She has since released the full tracklist, but could this album be another Sad Girl September staple?

Can Kacey Musgraves help us usher in Sad Girl September with her new album?

Before talking about the album, you might be wondering what the heck is Sad Girl September? At this point, there is no clear definition. However, to me, it’s basically the start of seasonal depression for some or just some times during the month when you’re feeling sad. Either way, there’s no right or wrong way to define Sad Girl September as it means something different to everyone.

One thing holds true though and it’s that Kacey Musgraves could be the catalyst for Sad Girl September 2021. Firstly, the album comes fresh off of her divorce which no doubt will be featured on the album in some capacity. Additionally, the album has such a dreamy title with “star-crossed” as in “starcrossed lovers” which is basically a couple doomed to fail in some way. She also confirmed that the album is a “tragedy in three parts,” which sounds delightfully miserable.

If her releasing the album wasn’t enough, Musgraves is also releasing a film based on the album which sounds pretty cool. Most artists don’t release films based on their albums but she’s never been one to follow trends. Considering it’ll start getting chillier in September, having a film to watch on Paramount Plus is a solid marketing strategy by Musgraves and her team.

This is just a wild prediction by yours truly, but a few songs seem like they have the potential to be incredibly sad. “good wife” seems a little too obvious of a pick, but it fits especially since she’s divorced now. Another predicted sad song is “hookup scene” which is likely a nod to Musgraves getting back out on the dating scene. Lastly, it seems like “if this was a movie…” could be another sad track especially if it’s anything like Taylor Swift’s.

As far as exciting album releases go, Kacey Musgraves should be at the top of your list. Her music is just so dreamy and compulsively listenable. Even if you’re not a fan of her type of music, she’s definitely worth checking out as she might surprise you. For Sad Girl September though, “star-crossed” should be at the very top of your list.
