The official trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrived this week and it is filled to the brim with nostalgia and scares. The legacy of the original franchise continues as a family discovers objects of the past that will help them save their future.

Was that description a little more dramatic than intended? Absolutely. However, it tracks as we learn that thirty years later after the original film, the family has to move into their grandfather Egon’s abandoned house in the “middle of nowhere”. While there, the kids discover that their grandfather had a role to play in saving New York from the supernatural.

At the same time, earthquakes keep disturbing the community, despite not being located anywhere near where ones would occur naturally. As time moves on, the town realizes that ghosts and ghouls are running amuck and Egon Spengler’s family steps up to help save their new home.

You can watch the trailer below:

It’s going to be interesting to see if the story will be mostly its own thing with touches of the original films. Afterlife has to maintain a delicate balance of being original, tying in to the old movies and not being so heavily reliant on the original films. So far, so good it seems.

The trailer implies that the daughter of the family, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), will be the focus of the story. She doesn’t fit in at school and remains quiet and reserved. Her mother even telling a friend that she wishes Phoebe would just “get in trouble”. Well, you got a lot more than you asked for, mama bear.

One thing I picked up is that it seems like the Ghostbusters secretary Janine Melnitz (reprised by Annie Potts) may or may not have gotten her wish and married Spengler. Which is honestly just so adorable. I’m really hoping that’s the case. It’s just a shame that Harold Ramis isn’t here to don the Ghostbusters suit once again.

Directed by the son of the original filmmaker, this film will be a combination of old and new. With a tease of a cast member at the end of the trailer, we’re certain this film will bring up a lot of nostalgia for fans of the original franchise. (I mean did you see the baby Stay Puft marshmallows?)

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman and produced by Ivan Reitman. It stars Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, Oliver Cooper, Bokeem Woodbine, and more.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited to see Egon’s grandchild blasting ghosts from the Ecto-1? Let us know!
