Five episodes into season 3 of In the Dark and we have seen some very interesting aspects of each of our main characters, but Murphy is the most fascinating. And with the season doing a short hiatus before episode six, we are taking a look at how our characters are doing up to this point.

While our foursome of Murphy, Max, Felix, and Jess was trying to lay low and get out of town for a while in an effort to evade Josh and his determination to take down Murphy, that didn’t last very long. Before Jess could get anywhere, she was kidnapped, leaving Murphy all on her own in a different country.

But we aren’t going there just yet. Felix is struggling with his own inadequacy and even the feelings that he has for Murphy, which has been interesting, to say the least. The fact that they had sex is something I did not see coming. But even he hasn’t quite grown to a point where he has the confidence he needs to speak his mind.

Max has proven that his bitterness is detrimental. He can’t let go of his hurt and anger over how Murphy let him go after everything he has done for her. And while we get it, at some point he either needs to let it go or he needs to tell her he loves her and find a way to deal with his pain.

Murphy is once again the star of the show on In the Dark

While we all know that Murphy is technically the star of In the Dark, she has often played second fiddle to her friends and lovers because of the storylines she gets involved with. But in season 3, all of that has shifted.

Murphy has finally found herself alone and without any support. And it did wonders for her as a character. She has always had someone to lean on and rely on, and finally, she had to survive on her own and she realized a hard truth – she needs other people. It also means that she may finally be realizing that she is a selfish person and has done real harm to others.

She is finally trying to do the right thing because for her it is in many ways all about Jess. Jess is in danger because of her and she is determined to save her best friend. And that means being willing to turn herself in to the police, even for things she didn’t do.

It is a change of pace for a character who has literally ruined the lives of all the people in her life. And while there is no coming back from the selfishness that really led to all of this, it is nice to finally see her thinking of others, and I don’t just mean Jess. She has even done her best to protect Darnell and Trey. (Too bad Max screwed up and set Trey on a path that ruined all of their not-so-well-laid plans.)

We won’t know what happens next on The CW series until Aug. 11, but for now, it is nice to see the show allowing growth for at least some of our characters. At this point, it would be nice if Max found a way to realize that Murphy was doing what she thought was the right thing for both of them and let it go. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
