Director and writer James Gunn recently revealed the truth about Harley Quinn’s inclusion in the upcoming film The Suicide Squad. In speaking with The New York Times, Gunn confessed WB had just one request for it.

When the Guardians of the Galaxy director signed on to helm the new interpretation of The Suicide Squad, WB gave him free reign to include pretty much whatever he wanted. King Shark? Done. Polka Dot Man? Absolutely. Whatever he wanted.

They did, however, have a small request. One that he didn’t have to take if he didn’t want to.

Per Gunn:

"I wanted to create what I thought of as the Suicide Squad. For me to react to David’s movie would make it the shadow of David’s movie. I wanted it to be its own thing completely. When Warner Bros. said they wanted me to do this, I watched the first movie for the first time, and I called them back and said, what do I have to keep from this movie? And they said, nothing. They said, listen, we would love it if Margot’s in the movie but she doesn’t have to be. You could come up with all new characters or you could keep all the same characters."

Thankfully for fans of the original film, he did include some recognizable faces. In addition to Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn making a return, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller are also back in the squad. That is the extent of the similarities between the two films, however. According to producer Peter Safran, the film won’t even be addressing the David Ayers interpretation at all.

It’s clear in both Gunn’s words and the statements made by WB that it’s important for everyone to realize this is its own film. In fact, they would probably rather have you forget the first one ever existed and assume they’re starting from scratch.

Though it will be interesting to see if any of the dynamics that the characters had in the original film roll over into this one. Amanda Waller will likely still be a hard a** but what else will there be?

From the onset, everyone knew this film was going to bring the zaniness of Guardians and crank it up to 11. Gunn didn’t have the restrictions that working the mouse house put on him, so he could get as gory and goofy as he wanted to. It’s going to be so much fun to see what he’s come up with for these characters and here’s hoping we will see Margot Robbie don the harlequin again.

Next. When will we see Harley Quinn again?. dark
