A riveting tale deeply rooted in African culture, Bacchanal takes us on a magical journey.  Veronica G. Henry’s debut fantasy novel Bacchanal gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what really went on during the carnival in the 1930s. Taking place in the deep south during an era of depression, it may seem like it’s all fun and games, but this carnival is hiding deep dark secrets.

In this African folklore-inspired tale we’re introduced to several talents who are a part of the carnival from fortune tellers to cooch shows. Yes, a cooch show is exactly what you think it is. Then there’s Eliza Meeks.

Abandoned by her family, Meeks becomes a maid. Fed up with the verbal abuse from the lady of the house, she’s now determined to get out of this horrid situation. When an opportunity to join the G.B. Bacchanal Carnival comes up, Eliza jumps at the chance.

It was almost cut short after she got arrested, but Clay the carnival overseer snuck her out. Liza’s talent is she can communicate with animals. Animals can shoot their thoughts into Eliza’s head, and she can do the same to them. The one thing she couldn’t control was the animals dying after communicating with her.

Animals are the main attraction of a circus, so the maid turned carnival headliner needed to get her power under control and quick.

Keeping you on the edge of your seat as the book continues, you’re drawn deeper and deeper into what evil truly lies in the carnival. While Clay helps Eliza leave her unhappy past, he’s no savior and holds secrets of his own. He may look like the owner of the carnival, but he’s really not.

Ahiku is an ancient evil demon known to the others as Geneva Broussard disguised as a beautiful woman is the true owner. What makes her evil? She feeds on innocent souls including children.

Living in her red trailer with Clay doing the dirty work making sure no one steps foot into her trailer. Eliza and the others grow curious about what’s hiding there and little does she know the demon has become weary of her as well. Ahiku is using the carnival to search for another demon known to be more powerful than her. Could it be Eliza? But how can a girl who communicates with animals be more powerful than an ancient evil demon?
