Shadow and Bone officially renewed for season 2 at Netflix
By Lacy Baugher
Get ready to go back to the Grishaverse: Netflix has officially renewed Shadow and Bone for a second season.
This news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to the many viewers who spent weeks this spring obsessing about this show, but it’s a relief to have it confirmed all the same. (I don’t know about you, but I need to see Nina get Matthias out of prison, is all I’m saying.)
Season 1 largely adapted the events of Shadow and Bone, the first book in Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse trilogy, and follows the story of Alina Starkov, a Ravkan mapmaker who discovers that she is not just a Grisha with magic, but a legendary Sun Summoner with the power to possibly save her world from the dangerous Shadow Fold.
The season 1 finale ends in such a way that not only sets up the next installment, Siege and Storm, but may also kick off the events featured in Bardugo’s Six of Crows novels. (The characters from Six of Crows have already appeared been introduced in the world of the television series in a sort of prequel capacity, even though the events of the book they star in haven’t actually happened yet.)
“I’m honored and thrilled to return to the Grishaverse,” showrunner Eric Heisserer said in a statement, “and continue the stories of these endearing characters, particularly Milo.”
And I think we can all agree: Milo better make an appearance (or several) in season 2.
Netflix broke the news of the season 2 renewal on the first day of its inaugural Geeked Week, an event that will feature updates on many of its most popular properties.
And Shadow and Bone is indeed one of those properties now, with over 55 million households having sampled the fantasy series in its first 28 days on the platform.
Watch the cast (adorably) share the news of season 2 below.
According to TVLine, Heisserer has big plans for season 2, including further exploring Mal and Alina’s relationship and introducing Nikolai – the Ravkan prince and privateer who stars in his own Grishaverse duology, King of Scars. (He’s very dreamy. Get excited.)
“I’ve been writing in the Grishaverse for nearly 10 years now, so I’m thrilled we get to keep this adventure going,” Bardugo said in a statement. “There are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to more of the saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes, and privateers who make this world so much fun to explore. It’s going to be real magic to see our brilliant, talented cast expand.”
