The CW hasn’t picked up the Tom Swift series yet, but we need it

The introduction for the Nancy Drew spin-off series, Tom Swift, has already aired and yet The CW has not yet picked the series up for a full season. While the Nancy Drew episode was not considered a traditional backdoor pilot, it was certainly a great way to get people familiar with the Tom Swift character, and yet, as of now, the series isn’t official. But we are keeping our fingers crossed that the show gets picked up and here’s why.

When it comes to diversity, there is still a long way to go on The CW (and TV in general) and if they pick up the Tom Swift series, then we are not only getting a black lead, but the character is gay, which is that added layer of inclusivity that we want and need. Plus, it would also be a chance to get more of LeVar Burton, who was cast to be the voice of Tom’s AI assistant, Barclay!

According to Deadline, there is certainly hope for the potential series, as it is entirely possible they could order an actual pilot to see how Tom Swift does all on his own without the assistance of the Drew Crew. And while we love Nancy Drew and her detective work, there is nothing wrong with having another person out there getting to the bottom of mysteries.

The CW has yet to pick up the Tom Swift series, but we want this Nancy Drew spin-off

While we certainly got to see a little bit of how Tom Swift operates, it does make sense that The CW might want to see more. After all, with the episode being a true Nancy Drew case with ghosts and everything, we didn’t really see how Tom’s series would be different. And sure you could point to his technology and money as making a massive difference in the way a mystery is solved, there does have to be a bit more than that.

However, no matter what is needed for The CW to say yes to a Tom Swift series, we want it to happen. We need more mysteries on our screen that aren’t police procedurals. And while the police might get involved (often to the detriment of the case), as Nancy Drew has proven, we can have a mystery without it being all about authority.

With Tom Swift, we want more of that. We want more mystery-solving and being an intelligent man with a plan who also likes finding puzzles to solve. While Tom might be grounded more in the technology side of problem-solving, versus Nancy’s more paranormal detective work, it will be interesting to see how these shows continue to find ways to overlap.

Honestly, we need The CW to say yes to Tom Swift. We want more detective work and mystery-solving without any superheroes and powers. And having diversity on our screens would be an added bonus.
