Let the ‘light’ be with you. For the fans and enthusiasts of the Disney Star Wars franchise, a real working lightsaber might soon become a reality.

For several years, Disney worked on obtaining several patents to launch actual working lightsabers. These are to be the most identical to the ones reflected in the films and other official Stars Wars mediums. Henceforth, fans will be delighted once they can wield the ‘real’ saber.

The chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, Josh D’Amaro revealed at the virtual A Special Look Inside Disney Parks event, that he pulled a prototype out of a small box, claiming that it was the ‘authentic’ lightsaber. How cool would it be to actually own one?

Is Disney really developing a real Star Wars lightsaber?

According to the patent, this is what the construction of the lightsaber would look like:

"“A special effects device for providing an energy sword effect. The device includes two long plastic semi-cylinders, and these two blade body members are rolled perpendicular to their length, which creates compact cylinders of material of small volume that can be provided on a pair of spools in a hilt. To extend the blade, a motor provided in the hilt unrolls the blade body members from the spools. Each blade body member passes through a blade forming guideway that nests the semi-cylindrical blade body members together as they leave the hilt. To retract the blade, the process is reversed. The lighting of the blade is achieved with a flexible strip of light sources. The light source strip is attached to a blade end cap and positioned in the center of the two blade body members such that it is pulled up along with the blade body members during their extension.”"

A look at the blueprint can be shown here.  Although it entails a traditional blueprint diagram, it is not difficult to point out that it resembles a lightsaber

The final product-if released-will be available to build at Disney Parks and at the upcoming Star Wars Hotel-which will be located in southern Florida. They will have a retractable element and an “energy” sword effect. While sabers are already being built in the parks, the new one will be a step closer and accurate to the official one.

More excitedly, one does not have to be a fully trained Jedi to own a real lightsaber. You can do your Jedi training right in your own backyard or home, or even at the parks themselves. The forces are limitless.

It is a pretty cool memorabilia piece for all Star Wars fans-old, older, and young alike.
