We’re just a week out from the season six premiere of Supergirl and The CW has finally dropped a trailer…sort of.

Clocking in at just over one minute, the majority of the trailer seems to be a direct continuation of the conflict from last season of Team Supergirl vs. Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor. Additionally, it seems as though all of the scenes from the trailer possibly take place within the same episode, so it’s basically just a trailer for the premiere, not necessarily the entire final season.

It’s also worth noting that the final season will consist of 20 episodes and be split into two parts, with the show taking a hiatus in late Spring and returning in the summer, so perhaps that’s got something to do with the very specific focus we see here.

You can view the Supergirl season 6 trailer in its entirety below.

There’s plenty of Lex who, although played to perfection by Cryer, has long overstayed his welcome, with the sixth season being the third season in a row that he’s appeared as a series villain. In the clip’s opening seconds, we see that he has ditched Leviathan and instead has been working with his mother, Lillian (Brenda Strong) in order to gain superpowers in his fight against Supergirl (Melissa Benoist).

We also get some nice moments for the show’s couples, including Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Dreamer (Nicole Maines), as well as J’onn (David Harewood) and M’gann (Sharon Leal). It even seems as though Lena (Katie McGrath) has officially become a member of the Superfriends, as she is shown punching Lex in the face with the team gathered at the Fortress of Solitude. Alex (Chyler Leigh) is still sporting her vigilante look from the end of last season, as well. Alas, no real Supercorp scene to continue the series-long tease.

Long-term fans of the show will spot several hints at what the beginning of the season will look like. Obviously, the show will have to deal with the collateral damage of season 5’s premature finale and deal with Lex once and for all. We also know that star Melissa Benoist was late in returning to production on season six between the pandemic and her pregnancy. At one point in the trailer, we see that Lex has the same device that transported Midnight to the Phantom Zone in the season five premiere. Is it possible that Supergirl somehow becomes trapped there? This would certainly explain the character’s absence for more than an episode or two.

Unfortunately, The CW has done a very disappointing job in hyping up the show’s final season. It’s almost like it’s an old cow put out to pasture, with the network not even bothering to do any press or even release a legitimate trailer for one of the network’s longest-running superhero series. Whereas freshman drama Superman & Lois received two trailers way before the show even premiered.

As we’ve seen in shows such as The CW’s Legacies and ABC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, the writing for television hasn’t necessarily benefitted from the production break caused by the pandemic. Here’s hoping our girl Kara will have the opportunity to go out with a bang, and not a network-tempered whimper.
