While the majority of Nancy Drew is about solving mysteries, handling ghosts, and family drama, each of Nancy’s friends has a past. And sometimes, their past comes back to haunt them. That’s exactly what happened to Bess in “The Quest for the Spider Sapphire.”

This episode saw Bess losing something important and it is heartbreaking. Although Nancy Drew was doing her part to save George, it really seems like no one was able to save Bess – and she didn’t really do what she needed to in order to save herself.

At the end of the last episode, “The Legend of the Murder Hotel,” we saw as Ace ran into a man claiming to be Bess’ husband. And while that does seem to be the case, there is always more to the story, including the fact that this man is not actually her husband, but rather this was a ruse they pulled as part of their less than savory activities. But Bess apparently set him up and now he wants revenge (of course).

Here’s the thing, even though Bess tried to tell her aunt what was going on, she never actually does. She doesn’t warn her at all. And she tries to handle the situation on her own, although Ace ends up stepping in, but in the worst way.

Nancy Drew shows Bess losing her family

We know that Bess is partly doing this to save Nancy and George, but stealing a valuable piece of jewelry off of your own aunt’s wrist is perhaps the worst betrayal, especially = after everything that woman did to make her feel like part of the family. Is it any wonder that the matriarch of a rich and respected family would cut off a member who would do such a thing?

Had Bess just told her Aunt what was really happening perhaps things would have been different. Or even warning her friends about who was in town and why could have made all the difference.

Instead, Bess has lost her family. And while she still has Nancy Drew and the rest of her circle of friends, there is something to be said for losing a family that had embraced you even with your checkered past (and yes they know all about her bad behavior).

Nancy Drew might have issues with her fathers, but it just seems different. Maybe because we expect these types of mistakes to come from Nancy over another member of the team, or because Nancy has no sense of how to treat people, but either way this was not what we expected for Bess and her future.

Of course this leaves us wondering what’s next for Bess and how is she going to right this wrong?
