Marvel fans have been patiently awaiting a Captain Marvel sequel since Carol Danvers flew into theaters back in 2019. And although the studio has confirmed a November 2022 release date for the follow-up to Carol’s story, it’s kept most plot details about the second film under wraps. Friday did deliver some news about Captain Marvel 2 at long last: Deadline reports that Velvet Buzzsaw‘s Zawe Ashton has been cast as the villain for the film.

Unfortunately, that’s the extent of what we know about Ashton’s role in the sequel, as both Marvel and the actress have yet to confirm Deadline’s report. Fans have started speculating about who the actress could be portraying, however, suggesting Marvel Comics characters like Queen Veranke and Moonstone. The former would tie into the Skrull storyline of the first film — and possibly Nick Fury’s Disney+ series — rather well, while the latter seems an inevitable introduction to the MCU given her comics history with Carol.

This is all just guess work, of course, and it’s totally possible Ashton will portray just one villain in the movie. After all, Marvel does love to have a rounded-out cast, and it wouldn’t be the first time one of its films boasted two baddies to contend with.

Ashton has previously appeared in television series like Fresh Meat and Wanderlust, along with a number of short films and a few Broadway shows.

What else we know about the Captain Marvel sequel

Outside of Ashton’s casting, things have been pretty quiet regarding Captain Marvel’s return to the big screen. Candyman director Nia DaCosta has already signed on to direct the upcoming sequel, with Megan McDonnell writing the script. Brie Larson will reprise her role as Carol, and Tenoyah Parris, who plays an older Monica Rambeau in WandaVision has also joined the cast.

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani has also been confirmed for Captain Marvel 2, suggesting the upcoming series will intersect with Carol’s story somehow.

As far as plot details go, it’s probably safe to say we won’t know much for the foreseeable future. Given Marvel’s tendency to tie all of its films together, it’s likely the studio will want to keep things under wraps as its other planned series and films premiere.
