Candyman director Nia DaCosta has been chosen to direct Captain Marvel 2 — and that’s an exciting development for a few reasons.

With film and television production at a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel fans haven’t had much to celebrate as of late. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is officially delayed, and many of the films in Phase 4 have also been pushed to later release dates — some more than once. This week did bring one bit of exciting news with it, though: Candyman director Nia DaCosta has signed on to direct the Captain Marvel sequel.

Naturally, the internet exploded with the news — and for good reason. For one, DaCosta will be the first Black woman to direct a Marvel movie. This will enable her to bring a new perspective to the franchise overall, and it will show Carol’s story from a new lens — one that’s far more likely to embrace intersectional feminism.

As The Hollywood Reporter also points out, DaCosta could very well become the first Black woman to direct a blockbuster superhero film overall, depending when Ava DuVernay’s New Gods arrives in theaters.

Either way, DaCosta helming Captain Marvel 2 shows that Marvel is making good on its promise to include and promote more diversity in its future Phases. The fact that she comes from an indie background makes the development even more interesting, suggesting that she’ll bring new perspectives in filmmaking to the role as well. And given that Phase 4 seems to be all about changing things up, this feels like the perfect time to experiment with the traditional superhero narrative.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently set to hit theaters on July 8, 2022, though that could certainly change as the health crisis continues to evolve. The plot of the film isn’t yet known, but reports have suggested that it could serve as a mini-Avengers movie, showcasing team-ups between several of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s major heroes. If that’s the case, that’s even more reason to look forward to this sequel — especially since Avengers 5 seems to be a long way off.
