Lavagirl and Sharkboy might be back in a We Can Be Heroes sequel
Robert Rodriguez is once again riding the wave of success as he celebrates We Can Be Heroes getting a sequel…
It’s been twenty years since Robert Rodriguez rose to prominence with Spy Kids. He even incorporated the character of Machete Cortez (Danny Trejo) into his own, more violent spinoffs. In 2005, he started a new trend with The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, a superhero flick conjured up in the mind of his then-7-year-old son, Racer. On Christmas Day 2020, we got a real treat with the release of the director’s new film We Can Be Heroes, starring Pedro Pascal as widowed father Marcus Moreno and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Ms. Granada.
The film is told from the perspective of Marcus’ daughter, Missy when she is forced to take charge of the other children of the Heroics when their parents are kidnapped by aliens. Of all the kids, the most noticeable is little Guppy, the daughter of Sharkboy and Lavagirl who has water-based powers like her father but she can move liquid instead of lava.

We Can Be Heroes became so popular upon its release that Netflix ordered a sequel, according to TV Line. According to Netflix, the film was streamed by 44 million subscribers over the holiday period. (A stat which likely got their attention.)
The announcement of a potential sequel comes off the back of director/writer/producer/editor Robert Rodriguez’s success with his The Mandalorian debut, which also happens to star Pedro Pascal and the announcement of the director’s producer role on the upcoming Mando spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett.
The movie is a standalone sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D which starred Taylor Dooley who appears in this film and Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner who did not reprise his role as Sharkboy this time around.
What will the sequel be about?
Since the sequel was only just announced, it’s unclear what its story might be. However, it doesn’t hurt to speculate. If anything, it could continue the superhero theme with the kids who became the next generation of The Heroics.
We Can Be Heroes could focus on another of the kids. It might even shift gears and choose to zero in on one of the parents while continuing with the story from the previous films.
It might even be about Missy’s grandmother as she trained Marcus’ generation of the Heroics so a prequel of sorts while keeping it in the present day while the kids are learning how to operate as an official team.
If we had to choose who the film should focus on, it should be Guppy and the relationship she has with her parents. Sure, they already had their own movie, but the sequel to We Can Be Heroes is likely to be a direct continuation like Spy Kids 2 was to its predecessor.
Will Taylor Lautner return as Sharkboy?
When it was announced that Lautner was not returning as Sharkboy, Twitter all but blew up in anguish. The reason the character only makes a cameo, wears a mask, and doesn’t speak in the whole of We Can Be Heroes is to allow Lautner to return if he wants to. It would be nice if he does.
