Into the Spider-Verse shared two photos to Twitter, teasing Spider-Man 2099, who may appear in the film’s sequel.

If asked to look back on the biggest animated hits from the past decade, most moviegoers would likely list 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse among the best. Miles Morale’s story brought a new take on Spider-Man to the big screen, introducing fans to the multiverse that exists in the comics. And the success of that film has left many fans awaiting its sequel — though 2022 feels like a long way off, especially since the original movie came out years ago now.

Luckily, Sony has whetted moviegoers’ appetites just slightly by sharing two images along with the message “one year closer to 2022.” Both shots showcase a Spider-Man from the multiverse brought to life in the first film: Spider-Man 2099. This character was introduced in the post-credits scene from the first movie, and he’s shown to have all kinds of advanced technology (to be expected since he’s living in the future). The post-credits scene also showed him watching over the multiverse, which means he’s a bit interested in what his fellow Spider-Men are up to.

Spider-Man 2099, who was voiced by Star Wars alum Oscar Isaac in the first movie, hasn’t been confirmed for the second installment — so whether Sony was simply celebrating the future with a tech-savvy Spider-Man or hinting that we’ll see the character again in Into the Spider-Verse 2 remains to be seen.

Given that he appears in the post-credits scene, we’re assuming he still has some role to play in the new movie. It would be nice to see his interest in the multiverse cause him to cross paths with Miles at some point. (And it would be even nicer if Oscar Isaac returned to voice him in the sequel, but no word on that just yet.)

For now, it seems fans will be left to speculate about the upcoming movie — at least until new images or a trailer emerge. Fingers crossed we’ll get one or both sometime soon.

Into the Spider-Verse 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 7, 2022.
