Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the Broadway musical The Prom will arrive on Netflix this holiday season and it looks like the glittery joy bomb we all need to see.

Broadway musical The Prom may have only run on Broadway for a little over a year, but its story will live forever now, thanks to a new Netflix adaptation arriving later this year.

The Prom follows the story of a quartet of self-obsessed theater stars who descend on a small, conservative Indiana town upon learning that a local girl, Emma, is not allowed to attend her school’s prom with her girlfriend.

However, their well-meaning, if slightly selfish, bout of celebrity activism has some unforeseen consequences and they’ll have to join forces with members from the local community to give Emma the prom she deserves.

This Netflix adaptation comes to us from Ryan Murphy, who is, yes, best known for his horror offerings like American Horror Story and Ratched. But let’s not forget this is also the man who brought us Glee, so a two-hour film full of singing and dancing high schoolers with a variety of personal issues is also right in his wheelhouse.

The Prom stars such famous faces as Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Cordon, Andrew Rannells, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kerry Washington. And, in all honesty, it looks like a total blast.

Now, maybe it’s just that we’re currently living in a dumpster fire reality, but a movie musical about giving two queer girls the prom of their dreams – and espousing values of tolerance, love, and kindness along the way – is basically everything that I personally need right now.

“I wanted to make something that was in [the] tradition of the old movie musicals that I grew up loving with my grandmother,” Murphy told Entertainment Weekly.

“I wanted to make something that had the sparkle and the charm and humor of Singin’ in the Rain. That’s a show business story. It’s a look at the inside of the film world, as opposed to The Prom, which looks at the Broadway community, but when you saw the musical on Broadway, it is just full steam ahead and never stops. I loved that quality because it did feel old-fashioned and modern.”
