Feel that nip in the air? Autumn is in full swing, so here are some soothing fall songs to add to your playlist as the leaves fall to the ground.

Every season has a pretty distinct sound. Summer is either upbeat and bubbly or hazy and lazy, winter is festive and warm, and spring is upbeat and hopeful. Most of us have specific songs that make us think of each of those seasons, so what about fall songs?

Fall is a season of change. The heat of summer leaves us and in comes a cold breeze. The vibrant green trees start to turn shades of orange, red, and yellow as leaves start to drift to the ground. Autumn usually makes us want to lazily stroll through a picturesque forest, go pumpkin and apple picking, or stay inside wrapped in a blanket and a nice book — and a soothing playlist, of course.

Most fall songs, admittedly, have a more subdued, almost sad sound. But fall can be a very sad time, as the days get darker and the air gets colder. There’s nothing wrong with cuddling up with a latte or cup of tea to listen to a nice, somber playlist. You need to get it out of your system before the holly, jolly winter season, of course.

So here are seven songs for an awesome autumn playlist for all your angsty fall feels!

1. “Cardigan” by Taylor Swift

You knew there had to be a folklore song on this playlist. In fact, your fall playlist could be entirely composed of songs from that album and you’d probably get the perfect autumnal vibes that you crave. Taylor Swift brought all of us into the woods with her for her latest album, which had more of an indie-folk vibe than any of her previous releases. It’s emotional and will make you feel warm and cozy, much like a “Cardigan.” Get it?

2. “Hello” by Adele

What is it about the fall that makes us feel sad? Well, in 2020, there’s a whole list of reasons, but any other year, the seasonal depression is probably to blame. With days getting shorter and colder, it’s no wonder the chipper mood from summer is long gone. But that just means it’s the perfect time to listen to Adele, especially “Hello.”

Off her album 25, “Hello” is grand and dramatic, and the music video gives off the lonely fall vibes you’re probably feeling inside. You may not be heartbroken like Adele, but it’ll still help you cope with whatever you’re going through right now.

3. “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses

Here’s a classic to add to your fall playlist! The Guns N’ Roses classic “November Rain” is a staple for this time of year. On the surface, you might think “Oh I get it, it’s about the crappy weather we get in the fall,” but in reality, it’s about a complicated relationship. It seems like this time of year is about heartbreak, which can be a bit depressing, but this song is also perfect to sing along to, so that can help lift your mood, too.

4. “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac

Don’t worry, the fall months don’t need to be depressing! “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac is having a major moment in 2020 thanks to TikTok, and it’s also the perfect fit for this time of year. It’s dreamy and soothing, and obviously Stevie Nicks’ witchy style is an eternal inspiration for fall fashion. You can put this on, pour yourself some tea, curl up with a good book, and enjoy the crisp fall air for a bit.

5. “The Good Side” by Troye Sivan

Sure, this is another song about a breakup, but Troye Sivan puts a positive spin on it in “The Good Side.” The simple acoustic arrangement pairs perfectly with Troye’s soft vocals as he sings about looking at the bright side of a hookup and being hopeful for the future. Isn’t that the perfect thing to manifest for the rest of your 2020? This year, everyone can benefit from trying to be a little more hopeful for the future, because what else can we do?

6. “Like Real People Do” by Hozier

Something about Hozier just screams fall. You can pretty much choose any of his tracks and they’ll fit right into your autumn playlist. From the guitar to his distinct voice, “Like Real People Do” is another hopeful song about love. Let Hozier sing to you about kissing the person you love and forgetting about the past while you embark on all your fall adventures, from pumpkin picking to baking to curling up with a glass of wine.

7. “Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush

Fall is the perfect time to start catching up on all those unread books on your bookshelf, and if you’re a fan of classics like Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, then the song of the same name by Kate Bush will be perfect for you!

The British songstress was inspired by the novel, and the track is widely considered one of the best of all time. It’s sung from the perspective of Wuthering Heights character Catherine Earnshaw, pleading at Heathcliff’s window to be let in. It’s Gothic and filled with drama, and of course, Kate Bush is an icon. Do you really need another reason to add this one to the playlist?
