Yara Shahidi has been cast as Tinkerbell in Disney’s live-action Peter Pan. Where else have you seen the actress?

If you’re anything like me, COVID-related delays have probably caused you to forget that movies are actually in pre-production right now, even if many of them aren’t filming right now. And Disney is still working on bringing us more live-action renditions of it’s animated classics, with Peter Pan being one of the next adaptations on the list. David Lowery’s Peter Pan and Wendy is still in the casting stages, but this week brought us one exciting bit of news: Yara Shahidi has accepted the role of everyone’s favorite sassy fairy, Tinkerbell.

This is a groundbreaking casting announcement, particularly for women of color who want to see themselves represented more in new takes on classic Disney films. Shahidi joins Jude Law as Captain Hook, Ever Anderson as Wendy, and Alexander Molony as Peter Pan himself.

And if you’re thinking you’ve seen Shahidi onscreen before, you very well might have. What other films or series has the actress starred in? Well, here are a few of her biggest roles.

Black-ish, Brown-ish, and Grown-ish

Yara Shahidi is probably best known for playing Zoey Johnson on the ABC sitcom Black-ish, and its spin-off series Brown-ish and Grown-ish. In the original series, Zoey is the social-media-savvy teenager of the Johnson family, but she quickly comes into her own, eventually growing up and becoming the lead in her own series, Grownish. Anyone looking for a glance of Shahidi’s acting chops heading into Peter Pan will definitely want to give these series a watch. (And she’s far from the only noteworthy actor and actress you’d want to follow after watching these shows.)

The Sun Is Also a Star

Shahidi starred in The Sun Is Also a Star, the 2019 film adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s novel of the same name. She played Natasha Kingsley, the movie’s protagonist who’s coping with her family’s deportation from the U.S., along with some very cynical feelings about romance. Shahidi nails the role, and if her time as Natasha is any indication as to what her movie career could look like, fans should be very excited about her signing on for Peter Pan and Wendy.

Imagine That

Were you a fan of Paramount’s Eddie Murphy-led comedy Imagine That? Then you may actually know Shahidi from her childhood days, since she plays Murphy’s daughter, Olivia Danielson, in the 2009 film. While Imagine That isn’t likely to show what Shahidi’s acting looks like today, it does demonstrate that she’s got what it takes to be in a fun-filled movie full of fantastical events. Sounds like she’s ready for Neverland to me.

Wizards of Waverly Place

Speaking of childhood throwbacks, fans of Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place may recognize Shahidi from her time guest-starring on the show. She was only in one episode (2009’s “Doll House”), but that may be enough to spark fans’ memories of the actress. It also shows she has a tiny history with Disney, one that’s no doubt about to get bigger now that she’s the new Tinkerbell. We can’t wait to see what she brings to the role — and where she goes next!
