Olivia Wilde talks about her top secret Marvel project and Kevin Feige’s involvement
Olivia Wilde has opened up about directing a Marvel project for Sony Pictures.
The Marvel universe is about to welcome an as-yet-unknown new movie to its slate of films with actress-filmmaker Olivia Wilde slated to take on the secret project. Wilde has recently broken her silence on the project, according to a report from Syfy Wire. The director has gone on the record during an interview on the podcast, Shut Up Evan, in which she implies the involvement of Marvel Studios’ boss, Kevin Feige.

With Feige’s involvement in the project, does this mean the film will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
No, it doesn’t.
He is the head of all things Marvel Entertainment as its CCO (Chief Creative Officer) and he presumably has some say over which characters become focuses of film projects. But that doesn’t mean this will ultimately be a central MCU film.
According to the Syfy Wire article, Wilde confirmed that her project is part of the Sony-Marvel universe of films to which the MCU Tom Holland Spider-Man movies are linked, even though they are technically not a part of the Marvel on-screen universe. However, she could not say which character would be the focus of her film. However, if a Tweet from her Twitter account in late August with a link to a Deadline Hollywood piece and a spider emoji is any indication, she will be directing a movie about a female Spider-person.
Wilde is just one of a number of prominent female filmmakers to take on the superhero genre in recent years. Others include Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984), Anna Boden (Captain Marvel), Chloé Zhao (Eternals), and Cate Shortland (Black Widow). Nia DeCosta will take on Captain Marvel 2 when production begins in 2021. She is also co-writing her Marvel project alongside her Booksmart screenwriter Katie Silberman.
What is unclear at the moment is whether Olivia’s project will join up with the other Marvel projects that are currently in various stages of production. These include Morbius andVenom: Let There Be Carnage which will both be released in 2021. However, Wilde is the first female director to helm a Marvel project for Sony.
