2020 VMAs: Taylor Swift made history with her Best Direction award
During last night’s Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift became the first female solo artist to take home the award for Best Direction.
Taylor Swift may have taken home a single award during this year’s Video Music Awards, but she made history with that win. The singer-songwriter won Best Direction Sunday evening, making her the first female solo artist to ever bring home an award in this category. That’s a pretty huge deal — and incredibly fitting given which video she won for.
“The Man,” which served as Swift’s directorial debut, is all about sexism and the privileges men are afforded that women just aren’t. It seems Swift is breaking a glass ceiling with her powerful feminist anthem, though, and we’re 100-percent here for it.

During her acceptance speech, Swift expressed gratitude for everyone who helped bring her music video to life. “I want to take an opportunity to say thank you for the team who believed in me as a first-time director and made this video with me,” she said.

Swift also took a moment to thank her fans, specifically calling out the overwhelmingly positive response to her latest album, Folklore, this year. In fact, just this week, the album landed No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the fifth consecutive week, tying with Lil Baby’s My Turn for the most weeks in the number-one spot.
“You are the only reason why the industry cares about anything that I do,” she said. “And everything that you guys have done with Folklore this summer, I’m just so blown away and taken aback by your generosity to me.”
