Amazon has officially ordered A League of Their Own, a series based on the beloved 1992 film.

Amazon has announced that they have picked up A League of Their Own, a new series based on the original 1992 film. The streaming giant is calling it a “reinterpretation” of the Penny Marshall classic and will be an hour-long presentation.

The show will broaden the focus of the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. A League of Their Own will examine such timely topics as race and sexuality while centering around a new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths, both on and off the field.

The talented cast includes Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Chante Adams (Roxanne Roxanne), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Kelly McCormack (Killjoys), Roberta Colindrez (Vida), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Famalam), and Priscilla Delgado (The Protected). Jacobson is also slated to executive produce along with Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle).

The following is a joint statement released by Jacobson and Graham:

"“Twenty-eight years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life.”"

The original film starred Geena Davis and Lori Petty as sisters Dottie and Kit, with a supporting cast that included Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Tom Hanks. Davis scored a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical). No word yet on if any of the original cast will be involved with the project.
