Due to social distancing restrictions, Charmed’s second season was cut short. What does this mean for the show’s third season?

When Hollywood shuttered production back in March, it had a large impact spreading from Tinseltown to Hilltowne. Charmed’s original 22-episode order was forcibly reduced to 19, leaving the show in a tight spot.

With episode 19, Charmed‘s unintended second-season finale, the series both finally convalesces its many wide-ranging storylines of the season while also introducing a new late-stage conflict meant to ramp up the tension for the original finale.

With production on season three delayed indefinitely, it’s unclear how the various cliffhangers from the second season will be resolved. Unlike RiverdaleCharmed hasn’t boxed themselves into a corner by announcing big plot maneuvers like a time-jump for its next season.

However, the writers will still have to wrap up the remaining storyline before they can move onto a new Big Bad. Whether they choose to do this by beginning season three with the unproduced episodes from the end of season two, or resolving the details through flashbacks or some other device, is unclear.

We do know they’ll have multiple issues to resolve. When we last saw the Charmed Ones, Harry and Macy had just barely gotten together. We can likely expect more exploration of the joys and challenges that come with a witch and Whitelighter’s romance (perhaps paralleling or deviating from the Piper and Leo story in the original series).

We also learned where Julian’s (Eric Balfour) loyalties lie. In a somewhat shocking turn of events, after appearing to be quite in love with Macy, Julian easily turned on her when he learned of her and her sisters’ abilities in an attempt to save his own (still alive and comatose) sister.

This was further complicated by the aforementioned late-stage reveal of an ancient being known as The Conqueror, who had tried to steal all of magic for himself. The ongoing plot of the season has revolved around “someone” stealing magical beings to apparently use them as a weapon.

Initially, it appeared as though Julian and his aunt Vivian were simply going to be using magic as a type of corporate warfare to profit from. The added plot wrinkle of another ancient being, who Julian may be inhabiting, is too much plot too late in the game.

With the added complication of a forced hiatus, it will be a lot for viewers to remember whenever Charmed season three does finally air and resolve the story. While not much has been said about the plot for season three, we can guess a few things based on what happened thus far in season two.

SafeSpace is no longer safe. After blowing up the Bat Cave at the beginning of season two, and forcing the sisters to go on the run, Charmed did it once again by forcing Elder HQ to be under attack. We’ll likely see the Charmed Ones pick up and move again to another location.

Without knowing what will happen with the Julian storyline or who the Big Bad for season three will be, we do know that Abigail and the rest of the demon mafia are still afoot. They will undoubtedly make a return appearance to cause more headaches for Harry and the Charmed Ones.

One positive of the extended delay in production is that the Charmed writers have plenty of time to figure out the hard work of how to address the issues of a season cut short. Regardless of what happens in season three, we can’t wait to see it.
