Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Is Deke the key to success?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has toned Deke down this season, which is good — because he might just be the key to winning the war against the Chronicoms.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has spent a fair amount of last season and the majority of this season toning down Deke and his annoying tendencies. Weird crush on Daisy aside, he’s been much more tolerable this season than when he came aboard in season five.
Which is a good thing! It makes interactions with him less cringe-worthy and more meaningful, and it makes him feel more like part of the team — one of the cogs that actually matters.
And there’s this strange feeling that the change of tone for Deke’s character has a purpose.
What if he’s the key to defeating the Chronicoms and Nathaniel Malick in this final season?
Think about it. Malick’s big weapon against the team right now is that he has Sibly’s time streams, so he knows with about 95-percent certainty what SHIELD is going to do before they do it.
But Deke comes from a timeline that no longer exists. If you remember from the start of the season, he shot Freddie Malick, which was not predicted. “Did you see that coming?” he asked as Malick was dying in front of him.
Which begs the question: Do Sibyl’s time streams account for Deke?
It feels like they don’t, because he’s technically not supposed to exist (especially if Fitz is dead). This means that Malick and the remaining Chronicoms can’t anticipate what Deke can do. And since he’s currently aboard the hijacked Zephyr (unnoticed), he may be able to stop them before they get to Fitz.
Or, at the very least, delay them to save Simmons (and as a result, Fitz).
If Deke has a larger role in these last few episodes of Agents of SHIELD, it would bring his character arc full circle from where we found him on the Lighthouse 80 years from now. And that would be a good thing.
