The Russo Bros. will direct Netflix’s The Gray Man, which will star Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Yes, you read that right. Yes, you should start swooning.

Netflix has released a number of hit films recently, from Extraction to The Old Guard, and it seems like it’s planning its biggest cinematic endeavor yet: a film directed by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame writers, Joe and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Talk about a star-studded lineup.

The film in question is The Gray Man, and it’s a thriller based on a book series by author Mark Greaney. Variety reports the film is already boasting a budget of more than $200 million, suggesting that Netflix is expecting big things from it. (And with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling in the spotlight, how could anyone not!?)

The Gray Man will pit these two Hollywood favorites against one another, with Gosling portraying an ex-CIA agent who’s turned into a killer and Evans playing the ex-colleague tasked with taking him in. If the movie is successful, the Russos have already mentioned the possibility of making sequels set in this world.

Speaking with Deadline, Joe Russo said, “The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe. We have all committed to the first movie and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins and Gosling’s character gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down.”

It’s also been suggested that these films could eventually reach the same heights as the James Bond or Bourne franchises — but we may be getting ahead of ourselves there.

There’s no word on when The Gray Man will arrive on the streaming platform, but we’ll be patiently awaiting when it does. Joe Russo predicted that production could begin in “late fall or early spring,” so a late 2021 release date seems likely. And really, this film could be exactly what we need after the disastrous year that is 2020.
