Not only are we getting a new, female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but it’s going to star Margot Robbie.

It’s been a while since fans have gotten anything new from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but it seems Disney is looking to revamp the pirate’s life by putting out new films set in the world of Captain Jack Sparrow. Not too long ago, it was revealed that fans would be getting a reboot of the original films, but it seems there’s more than just that in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, we’re also getting a female-fronted movie that’s completely separate from the original story. And honestly? We’re here for it.

Details on the new project are sparse at the moment, but it seems Birds of Prey fans will be eager to see it. Not only has Margot Robbie been tapped to take on the film’s lead role, but Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson will be penning the script.

As far as the plot goes, the specifics are anyone’s guess — but it seems the film is veering away from any association with Jack Sparrow and his story. Instead, the focus seems to be on bringing Disney World’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride to life — though what, exactly, that entails remains to be seen.

The only other thing we know is that Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original Pirates films, will be serving as producer on both this one and the reboot that’s coming our way. With that in mind, at least fans can rest knowing the project is in good hands — and let’s be honest, with Margot Robbie at the forefront, were we ever really concerned?

This new Pirates film is still in the early stages of development, so there’s no timeline for when production could begin — though we’ll be … er, patiently … waiting for more updates!
