Disney appears to be moving forward with a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, and is eyeing Karen Gillan to play the franchise’s new female lead.

Rumors have been flying since 2018 that Disney was planning on relaunching its popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but now we have official confirmation that the process is underway. The studio is, in fact, going with a reboot of the films (sorry, Johnny Depp fans), and is looking at featuring a female lead this time around.

One of the top names being bandied about to lead this reboot is Doctor Who and Jumanji star Karen Gillan, who also plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and had previously expressed interest in being a part of the franchise.

While character and plot details are being kept hush-hush for now, it’s not a far leap to assume that, if Disney lands Gillan, she will likely be portraying the flame-haired Redd. Redd is a popular female pirate character pictured in the Pirates of the Caribbean Disney Park attractions and is also a live meet-and-greet character for patrons of the theme park.

Disney previously enlisted Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliot, who wrote the previous entries in the film franchise, to create a new direction and fresh voice for the films. Jerry Bruckheimer is still said to be a producer, with the movie having a working budget of over $100 million. At this time, the movie is being looked at as a theatrical offering, despite speculation that indicated it could be joining other Disney films, like The New Mutants and Mulan, as possible straight-to-Disney+ releases.

Gillan would be a great catch, and given her extensive action/adventure background seems like a shoe-in to lead a new franchise. However, we’re not sure how we feel about a female-led movie (and potential franchise) being created, written, and produced by all men. It would make us feel a lot better if there was at least one woman in the mix. Maybe they’ll land a female director?
