The Bold Type season 4 episode 11 review: Definitely bigger
By Andi Ortiz
The Bold Type is back with the rest of season four, and we have definitely hit the next level. Here’s what went down in the mid-season premiere.
It’s day … something … of quarantine, and no, we still don’t know when things will get to new normal. But the good news is, we can see our friends Kat, Jane, and Sutton again! The Bold Type has six episodes left in season four, and it kicked them off with a bang.
Well, actually, the mid-season return started off quietly.
It should’ve been a happy moment to see our OT3 back on our screens again — and it was, but only after five minutes of pain. Seeing Jane struggle to climb the steps into her apartment, seeing her fight to grab a spoon from Sutton, all of it was heartwrenching. When Tiny Jane hurts, we all hurt.
But that’s one of the things The Bold Type does best; it showcases real moments. A double mastectomy is no small procedure. And odds are, the true pain of it is impossible to understand if you haven’t actually gone through it.
As Jane showed, it’s not just months of physical pain and rehabilitation. It’s a mental and emotional wringer as well. While it was comforting to see Jane back at Scarlet and kicking off her vertical — in an office with walls and everything! — she wasn’t quite our Jane. Nor should we have expected her to be.
Still, she handled it with grace, and by the end of the night, the Jane we know and love started to return. And now, she’s a member of The Belle, has hired two awesome writers, and is on her way to big things.
Of course, the same can be said for Sutton Brady-Hunter. That just feels good to say, doesn’t it? Even better: Sutton Brady-Hunter, official Scarlet Stylist.
Our girl is thriving in her new normal, clearly having adapted well in the last three months. Her latest venture is styling Mara Chamberlain, a former child star, hoping to get people to start seeing her for the young adult she now is.
Given how Sutton has done with Carly, you’d think she’d be a natural at this. And she is, but with just a few missteps.
As it turns out, this particular starlet has a bit of a marred reputation after showing up drunk and stealing designer clothes from a previous shoot. In an effort to maintain her relationship with the fashion house, Sutton backs out on getting clothes from the designer she promised.
Of course, the situation ran a little deeper. Mara had found out her mom/manager had been stealing from her, and lashed out. It’s a touching reveal between her and Sutton, especially considering Sutton’s own struggles with her mother Babs in the past.
Naturally Sutton course-corrects, knocks it out of the park, and calls it day. Oh, but she might be pregnant! She’s four days late, and that’s all the knowledge we have on the situation so far. It’s fine. Who’s stressing? Not us!
For what it’s worth, if a baby is in Suttard’s future, Jane and Kat are going to be the best godmothers.
Speaking of Kat, she’s having the roughest go of things this week. In the three months since losing her job at Scarlet, she’s become a full time activist, attending protests and standing up for causes she believes in.
Apparently, she’s also part of a throuple now? We got exactly no information on that, so we’ll have to just roll with it for now, but we will need some context at some point.
The problem with being a full-time activist is that it’s not a steady paycheck, and Kat’s parents aren’t going to let her keep living in her place for free. The idea of her moving in with Jane is a blessing, but it’s still some tough love.
Kat comes close to accepting a job at a furniture company, and as much fun as it would’ve been to see the girls recreate the iconic “PIVOT!” scene from Friends, it just wouldn’t have worked. So for now, things are pretty up in the air for Kat.
It’s fitting that the episode was titled “Leveling Up,” because that’s exactly what all three women are doing. There was a distinctly different vibe to the show, seeing this new stage of Kat, Jane, and Sutton’s lives in full swing.
Admittedly, there were times when it felt like the idea wasn’t that they were leveling up, so much as aging up. Jane’s interview with Addison Harper, her Gen Z hire, was cringeworthy at best.
On the whole though, having The Bold Type back is exactly what we need right now. (Even if only five episodes left in the season already feels like things ending too quickly.)
But seriously, we need to know more about this possibility of a Bold Baby joining the family.
