After showing Tails during the end credits for Sonic the Hedgehog, it seemed likely there’d be a sequel — but now we have official confirmation.

Sonic the Hedgehog zoomed into success earlier this year, raking in more than $300 million worldwide at the box office after it hit theaters. Given the positive reaction to the film — and the fact that it teased the arrival of Tails during its end credits — it seemed likely there’d be a sequel on the horizon. And now we can officially say there is.

Variety reports that a second movie is in development from Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy, with Jeff Fowler directing once again and Pat Casey and Josh Miller returning to pen the script. There’s no word on which actors will be reprising their roles, but we’re crossing our fingers to see Ben Schwartz (the voice of Sonic), James Marsden (Tom), and Jim Carrey (Dr. Robonik) grace the big screen once again.

Given that the sequel is still in the early stages of development, there’s also no clue as to when production might start — and given that many states still have restrictions in place due to the health crisis, it could be a while.

In the first film, Sonic found a home on Earth with his new friend Tom, all while being chased down by Dr. Robonik. The two were able to overcome the villain, but that doesn’t mean Carrey’s character is gone for good — he was simply transported to one of the other worlds Sonic has access to with his Rings. That leaves the door open for him to come back and seek revenge, but he’s not the only one after Sonic.

The beginning of the film also teased the Echidna clan hunting down our favorite blue hedgehog, so it’s possible we’ll see them as the sequel’s main antagonists. And, of course, we know Tails is bound to show up — meaning the second installment might tie more into the video games than the first one.

Whatever happens, it’s nice to know we’ll see a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog somewhere in the future. And who knows? Maybe if that’s successful, we’ll see more video games get adapted for the big screen. (We’re still waiting on that Detective Pikachu sequel….)
