Rosario Dawson: From Mandalorian rumors to setting her sights on Star Trek: Picard, make it so!
Rosario Dawson discussed being cast in The Mandalorian, and how she’d like to segue that recent dream casting to playing the ultimate trickster, Q, on Star Trek: Picard. Which begs the question if the omnipotent being will finally make an appearance in Picard’s second season.
Rosario Dawson’s turn as Allegra Dill on USA’s Briarpatch has ended, but she’s hinted that she may be joining The Mandalorian as Ahsoka Tano in season two, a long-rumored bit of news, thanks to a massive push by fans.
“That’s not confirmed yet but when that happens, I will be very happy. I’m very excited for that to be confirmed at some point,” Dawson said in a Variety interview, indicating that it was “a million-and-one percent because of the fans.”
That’s not all either. The 40-year-old stunner is a big Trekkie, and has planted the idea of playing one of the most flamboyant characters across the Star Trek universe, the ultimate trickster, Q, an idea suggested by the actress’s father.
“I mean it would be great ‘cause then I could jump on Discovery. I could be on Picard. I just want to be with Jean-Luc Picard,” said Dawson on the Variety After-Show, gushing at the chance to be on the series.
“The two universes, Star Trek and Star Wars. I get in those two, I’m telling you, man, that’s it. I will just retire. And then I can just concentrate on going to school and running for office. That would be it,” Dawson added.
It’s hard to imagine Q being played by anyone besides John De Lancie, who memorably portrayed the scene-stealing, charismatic role that landed the character in more than one Star Trek vehicle. (Caveat: Q is my favorite character in the Star Trek lexicon. I admire Jean-Luc Picard, but I would jump at the chance to play the all-powerful, omnipotent being Q in a heartbeat.)
Wouldn’t it be fun for De Lancie to return to the intergalactic universe and foil with Picard one more time, especially in Picard’s new Data-like AI form? Would he have the same hilariously irritating effect on him? (For a look back at the best Picard-Q episodes, here’s a fun list.)
Perhaps the talented Dawson could join as a member of the Q collective, or another form of Q (any of them are fun to ponder) in an upcoming season of Picard. Surely, in this universe, there’s room for bringing these omniscient beings back into play. The Borg returned (who Q first introduced Picard to in the first place in “Q Who” on The Next Generation), and there’s a delightful fan theory that hints at the option of seeing Q again, in the form of Captain Crandall referenced by Will Riker and Deanna Troi’s daughter in Episode 7 of Picard.
Dawson’s fans are pretty dedicated, and the actress is smart to make the mention. Let’s hope this becomes the next cause for them to rally behind.
I’m personally hoping that both De Lancie and Dawson make their way to the Trek universe. The playful, mischievous explorer would perhaps lighten some of the dreariness that occasionally weighs down Picard, who Q has always harbored a soft spot for. Although Q was labeled a “pest” many times on TNG (“He’s devious and amoral and unreliable and irresponsible and … and definitely not to be trusted” is just one of Picard’s typical outbursts about the mischievous entity, “QPid”). He also managed to uncomfortably push Picard in directions that benefited humanity.
That famous facepalm Picard meme used by everyone? It originates as a reaction to Q, of course.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that someone at CBS will “make it so.”
Star Trek: Picard season one is streaming on CBS Access. No definite date is set for the premiere of season two, with earlier news that it could stream as soon as fall of this year. However, with the global pandemic, I would estimate that the second season will air sometime in 2021 at the earliest.
