5 big questions Grey’s Anatomy probably won’t answer before season 16 ends
By Meg Dowell
With season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy concluding prematurely, we might reach the end of the finale with many questions still unanswered.
As soon as it was announced that Grey’s Anatomy would end its 16th season at 21 episodes instead of 25, fans immediately started questioning how things would end.
Because the show is known for reserving its most dramatic episodes and Earth-shattering cliffhangers for its midseason and season finales, it immediately became clear we wouldn’t reach that level of hype this time around.
We can live without a big cliffhanger, though. What’s worrisome to most are the storylines that might not get fully resolved by the time the finale ends this Thursday.
Here are some of the questions we might have to wait on for answers.
Will Catherine Decide to Stay With Richard?
There’s no denying this relationship has had its problems from the very start. And the one thing that annoys fans most about Catherine in particular is that she hasn’t really changed much over the years. Unless you’re of the opinion that she has changed for the worse.
Even after Richard stood by her through tough times — most recently a potentially fatal cancer diagnosis — she didn’t hesitate to try completely destroying his life the moment she got the chance.
Right now, it seems like she might actually regret all that time she spent making Richard absolutely miserable. But if he turns out to be okay, will she still choose to walk away from him? We might not find out for a while.
Grey’s Anatomy could use this as an opportunity to finally force some much-needed character development onto Catherine Fox. But even if she does come out of this having changed for the better, would the other characters — and the audience — be so quick to forgive her?
Will Meredith and McWidow Finally Get Together?
Meredith Grey has struggled — understandably — to find love again after Derek’s death. Fans supported her when she was single. They tried to support her when she started dating again. Things with DeLuca might end on a positive note, but that doesn’t mean they’ll become romantically involved again.
That’s where McWidow comes in. The show has been slowly preparing fans for a relationship between the two of them, especially when it rolled out his heartbreaking backstory. But will something finally push them together after so many months of “will they/won’t they”? Maybe. But probably not before the end of season 16.
While some might argue Meredith’s character arc might best conclude without implying she needs a love interest, she and Hayes are perfect for each other. They understand each other’s grief. And they look good together — you can’t deny that fact even if you don’t ultimately ship them.
Is Amelia’s Baby Okay?
Those who have been with Amelia since her Private Practice days have been rooting for her ever since Carina forced her to admit she was pregnant. After having tragically lost her first child (as well as the father of that child) — on top everything she’s been through since then — fans are ready for her to finally get her happily ever after.
We’re all hoping for a healthy baby — Amelia and Link deserve that after all they’ve been through. both separately and together. But there are theories out there that this isn’t the end of Amelia’s story.
The show always presents her with a brutal challenge. Maybe motherhood won’t be as much of a throwaway subplot as it’s ended up being for Teddy.
Will Teddy Leave Owen for Tom?
Whether you’re tired of this love triangle or hanging onto it with all your hopeless romantic strength, it’s kept the drama going for over a season now. Owen and Teddy were fine together. Teddy and Tom were also fine together. But it’s unlikely either of them will let Teddy go quietly into the arms of the other.
Teddy’s recent backstory reveal has left many of us confused. But it’s also presented the very real possibility she could end up choosing neither Owen or Tom. Owen will always be the father of her child, and Tom will hopefully remain a close friend (they really are good for each other in that way). But not all love triangles have to end with the woman choosing between two men, right?
It wouldn’t be unlike Grey’s Anatomy to make Teddy’s decision a cliffhanger, leaving fans to wonder whether she chose between her two love interests or decided she didn’t want either of them after all.
Will DeLuca Get Help Before It’s Too Late?
Grey’s Anatomy planted the seeds of DeLuca’s current mental health storyline a long time ago, and many of us completely missed it. But we’ve seen him spiral progressively downward with each episode, and even witnessed a full breakdown.
It looks like he has one more shot to prove to Bailey that he is capable of thinking critically, even if he isn’t thinking or behaving rationally due to his illness. We’ve already (presumably) seen him get one thing right that no one else saw or believed. He could be right again.
Maybe when this is all over — and if his predictions about Richard to turn out to be correct — he’ll not only have regained the trust of his friends and colleagues, but he’ll also realize he needs to get his mental health under control before he can help more patients.
Which question do you hope the Grey’s Anatomy season 16 finale answers before the show goes on hiatus again?
