2020 Grammy Awards: 5 artists who will probably take home a trophy tonight
The 62nd annual Grammy Awards are tonight, and some of the biggest names in music have been nominated for awards. Who’s likely to take one home?
The 62nd annual Grammy Awards have arrived, and in addition to tons of stunning looks and show-stopping performances, viewers are in for an interesting night — if only because this year’s nominees are made up of some of the most popular musical artists in the industry. Whoever wins in each category, it’s going to be a close call each time. There’s just no denying all the talent up for awards this year.
In fact, so many impressive musicians have received nominees, it’s hard to even predict who will win which category. Categories, aside, though, we do suspect that certain artists will snag at least one win over the course of the night.
Here are five nominees that will probably leave this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony with a trophy in hand.
Lizzo
Putting aside the fact that Lizzo is one of the most bad*ss women to grace the music industry in recent years, she’s also up for eight awards this year — meaning it’s likely she’ll take something home from tonight’s ceremony. With nominations in the categories for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Urban Contemporary Album, it’s clear Lizzo’s music has made an impact over the past year.
Let’s just hope she’s acknowledged for it. (And, come on, with so many opportunities to win, how can she not be?)
Ariana Grande
After the year of “Thank U, Next,” it seems impossible that Ariana Grande won’t take home at least one win this at this year’s Grammy Awards. That one song alone had a massive impact on music, and that’s not to mention all the praise Grande received for her album of the same name.
The pop star is up for a number of categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album. Given how beloved Grande is, it seems likely she’ll come out on top of one of these categories. If not, we have one thing to say to the Academy: Thank U, Next.
Lil Nas X
If you didn’t already have “Old Country Road” stuck in your head from last year, you probably do now, all thanks to the mention of Lil Nas X. That was one of the biggest songs of 2019, and it’s thanks to Lil Nas X that we have it. And that song alone is up for Best Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Music Video, while Lil Nas X is also up for Best New Artist, Best Album of the Year, and Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Panini.”
Given how huge Lil Nas X — and “Old Town Road” in particular — has been over the past year, it seems likely he’ll take home a Grammy in one of these categories.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish has taken the music world by storm over the past couple of years, and her 2019 album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” has been greeted positively by fans and critics alike. In fact, she’s even been chosen to work on the new Bond theme — an impressive accomplishment for an artist as new as she is.
Also impressive is the amount of nominations she’s gotten for this year’s Grammys, including Best Album of the Year, Best Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Solo Performance, and more. Eilish seems like a shoe-in to take home her first Grammy, and we’ll be cheering when she does.
Taylor Swift
It’s no secret that Taylor Swift is one of the biggest artists of the 21st century, and with a new album out last year and a Netflix documentary coming out this year, it doesn’t seem like fans are getting any less interested in the pop star. In fact, after the whole debacle with Scooter Braun, they’re probably more supportive now than they’ve been in the past — and her popularity could certainly contribute to her winning a Grammy this evening.
While she isn’t up for quite as many categories as some of the other artists on this list, Swift could easily take home Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Song, or Best Pop Solo Performance. In fact, she already won for Best Pop Vocal Album last year, so it’s not too much of a stretch to assume history could repeat itself during the 2020 Grammys.
