Warner Bros. released another poster for Birds of Prey in the lead-up to the film’s premiere date on Feb. 7, and it shows Harley Quinn attempting to redefine herself with a girl gang.

DC fans looking to a female-fronted installment in February can officially get excited: We have a new poster for Birds of Prey!

This one pays homage to Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. Now, I’m not an art historian, but the message is clear: Harley’s emancipation is tied to a rebirth of sorts. Out from the shadow of her abusive boyfriend, The Joker, she’s looking to redefine herself — and she’s going to do that with a girl gang who kick a lot of tail.

But the choice of Venus, Roman goddess of love and desire, is an apt one as well. People tend to skip over the fact that she’s also the goddess of victory. It’s an overlooked detail about a deity tied to romance, sex, and fertility. Harley is often sexualized and depicted as the side bit to another character’s larger story. She’s too popular to be considered a footnote, but she’s usually the ampersand to Joker and his insanity. But that will not be the case in Birds of Prey.

I’m of the mind that this movie might as well be called The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, considering the marketing’s focus is solely on Harley, and so is everyone else’s. But whichever way you slice the name, I’m super excited for this film to drop.

Feb. 7 is months away, and this movie has been on the buzz train for some time now. I’m getting antsy just waiting on it, but soon Birds of Prey will come swinging into theaters near us, and we’ll get to see just what an emancipated and victorious Harley Quinn looks like in the DCEU.

Next. 4 ways we could see an all-female MCU movie unfold. dark
