Robert Downey Jr is Dolittle and that could be this trailer’s saving grace
The first trailer for the Robert Downey Jr. film, Dolittle, has arrived. And after watching this trailer, the actor might be the best part of the movie.
Right away, I have to say that I love Robert Downey Jr. I think he is a great actor. And that’s why I am excited for his upcoming movie, Dolittle. However, this first trailer has left some of us with questions, and only time will tell how this all plays out.
Beyond my appreciation for RDJ, I also have to give a lot of credit to this trailer for its stunning visuals. The imagery packed into this two-minute trailer was everything we could have hoped for without even knowing we wanted it. And the choice of music was spot on, because this really does seem like a “wonderful world.”
However, we still have some questions. This includes finding out what exactly the story they plan to tell is. Sure, we can look it up and get more clues from the synopsis for Dolittle, but based on this trailer, I have no clue beyond some adventure across the high seas.
If you’re curious about the storyline, it is based on a book from the 1920s called Voyage of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story follows the doctor seven years after his wife dies, when he is living a life sequestered away from everyone. However, when the queen herself falls ill, it is up to the doctor to find a cure. So, he sets off on this adventure to basically save the day.

(Now that we know what the story is going to be about, we can get back to some of our other questions about this trailer.)
Up next, can we just point out that weird accent that RDJ is rocking in this trailer? I’m not sure what is up with that, but it was a bit strange. Maybe it will grow on me, but I think I need to hear him speak a bit more before I can decide how I feel about this accent, especially since it is a departure from his standard speaking voice.
Another question I have is one that might be a bit more problematic. Are we going to see another case of cultural appropriation? If you are wondering where this question comes from, it’s about Antonio Banderas’ character. Based on the IMDb page for Dolittle, the actor is playing a pirate by the name of Rassouli, which has Arabic connotations. And even that scene itself made it seem like we were going to be dealing with Middle Eastern settings.
Honestly, in two minutes, it’s hard to get a feel for which direction this movie is going to go in terms of doing this character and his story justice. However, we have the excitement of Robert Downey Jr. as a beloved character, Doctor Dolittle, and of course animals that talk (at least to RDJ), which is certainly enough to keep us on the hook waiting for more. Plus, the cast is pretty impressive, which is definitely a bonus for us.
I also have to point out that this movie is giving us a reunion between Tom Holland and RDJ. Even if the former is voicing a dog named Jip, I am OK with that just to get these two back together again. Honestly, this is enough reason for me to head to the theater because these two together are pure gold.
Hopefully the next trailer for Dolittle gives us a bit more information or at least helps to ease any worries we have about the way they plan to tell this story.
