The spooky season is here, and haunted hotels are ready to welcome guests for a spirited stay. Do you dare cross that threshold?

From the uncertain noise at night to the chill in the air, haunted hotels can be eerie fun. While some hotels might have a spirit lurking in their midst, other hotels are situated close by to other haunts. In some ways, that proximity offers the best of both worlds.

While some people believe in spirits and others do not, the stories and legends can be entertaining. Just like the movies that entice us or the haunted houses that bring the screams, these hotels and areas have their own appeal. Fact or fiction, the lore makes for an interesting stay.

The Midwest offers several locations that bring haunt seekers closer to the paranormal. While these locales haven’t been vetted by The Ghostbusters, the appeal can be just as compelling as that amazing spa.

Here are some hotels that will bring the haunts a little closer this spooky season.

Chicago, Illinois

The city of broad shoulders has many a ghost tale. While some hotels have questionable pasts, the area has numerous stories of hauntings. From Graceland Cemetery’s Inez Clarke statue that vanishes to the reappearing silhouette in the Water Tower’s window, the connection to the other world is great in Chicago.

Since there is such a rich connection to the beyond in the Windy City, why not stay in a hotel that is close one of these haunted areas? From the Hotel Zachary, which is near Graceland Cemetery, to The Westin Michigan Avenue, close to the Water Tower, there are several hotels that are in close proximity to all things spooky.

For those really looking for a connection to history, consider a stay at the Blackstone Hotel.  This location is famous for its well-known visitors. From presidents to movie stars, the history linked to this hotel could be as haunting as the ghost stories.

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit is looking to rebuild after many struggling years. From its roots with Motown to its connection to the automotive industry, a few ghost stories have woven themselves into the mix.

For example, David Whitney was quite a wealthy man in Detroit. It is said that he may roam the halls of the restaurant, The Whitney. Why not stay the night at Aloft Detroit at the David Whitney and see if the ghost comes for a night cap?

Minneapolis, Minnesota

While the frigid temperatures and copious amounts of snow can be frightful, the Minnesota music scene has its share of haunts. First Avenue is said to have a woman in a green army jacket appear.

For those looking to welcome the paranormal into their room, The Emery, Autograph Collection allegedly hosts the spirit of John Moshik. The criminal was brutally hung in city hall, and it marked the last time this punishment was enforced.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Historic hotels often have a connection to the paranormal. La Fonda on the Plaza is both historic and spirited as far as hotels go. From the ghost of the Honorable Judge Slough, who was shot in the hotel’s lobby, to salesman who lost all his money in a card game, the stories are as entertaining as the ghosts’ visits.

While these visions might not always appear on cue, the stories make a stay at the historic La Fonda quite entertaining. Wonder what other stories are hidden in the oldest hotel in America? Stay there yourself and find out.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Sometimes the youngest ghosts can be the most persistent. In Cincinnati, those tortured young people want to add some frights to your visit.

At the Courtyard Cincinnati Covington, the ghosts from the former orphanage are still looking for that forever home. Could they travel home with you after your stay?

Columbus, Ohio

If you really want to seek some paranormal activity, the Westin Great Southern Columbus is considered a hot bed for ghosts. Having been featured in many ghost tours, this oldest hotel in the city is considered one of the haunted hotels worth visiting.
