NYCC 2019: 5 of the biggest things that happened on day one
This year’s New York Comic-Con is officially underway, and there are already plenty of big announcements to get excited about.
It’s official: New York Comic-Con has arrived. And while we’ve only been through one day of this year’s convention, there are already plenty of exciting announcements to talk about. After all, NYCC is the perfect place for networks and film production companies to drop trailers or reveal release dates for their upcoming projects.
And even with the convention just starting to heat up, attendees have gotten to see a number of screenings and trailers for highly anticipated series and films. Add all the celebrity appearances and release date reveals, and fans can surmise that there’s going to be plenty more to look forward to over the next few days.
But what were some of the biggest things that happened on day one of NYCC?
Ryans Reynolds showed up to preview Free Guy.
If you want a panel or event to be a success, inviting Ryan Reynolds to speak is a surefire way to attract a crowd. Reynolds is one of those celebrities who always seems to be in the limelight, mostly because people just enjoy his sense of humor. And the actor showed up at this year’s NYCC to preview Free Guy, an upcoming action/comedy film he’s starring in.
And Reynolds wasn’t the only big name involved with the project to speak on the panel, either. Stranger Things actor Joe Keery was onhand, as well as Taika Waititi and Jodie Comer — all of whom have roles in the film. Director Shawn Levy also shared his thoughts, and attendees got to see the first trailer for Free Guy. Its videogame-centric plot looks comical enough to entertain just about anyone, but with a cast like this, we wouldn’t expect anything less.
Apple TV+’s Servant got a release date and teaser trailer.
Apple TV+ is one of the many upcoming streaming services attempting to boost its television offerings, and Servant is among the series that viewers will be able to stream on the platform. The appeal here comes from the fact that the series is the work of M. Night Shyamalan, who’s known for creating psychological thrillers that blow viewers’ minds. And given that this series falls into that category, fans can expect some bizarre happenings — an expectation that was already partially met when the trailer dropped at the show’s panel on Thursday night.
In addition to getting its first trailer, the series also got an official premiere date at the convention. Servant will premiere on November 28.
DC Universe’s Harley Quinn got an official release date.
DC Universe has plenty of animated series with cult followings, but its upcoming Harley Quinn is generating a lot of attention as of late. The official trailer for the series dropped at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but NYCC brought us one step closer to actually seeing the finished product.
During the DC Universe panel at NYCC, executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker revealed that the premiere date for the show will be November 29. That means we won’t have long to wait before we can see one of our favorite DC villains in action once again!
Fans got to see the premiere of The Purge‘s second season.
The concept of The Purge is one that seems to intrigue horror fans, as it’s inspired several films and two seasons of USA’s television series. The second season of The Purge arrives later this month, but those who attended the show’s panel at NYCC got to see the premiere just a little bit early. The stars and creators also discussed their thoughts on the upcoming season, and fans were able to check out some of the costumes that are featured on the series. Overall, it made for an immersive experience, giving fans of The Purge a little bit of everything in a single two-hour timeslot.
We learned more about Star Trek: Picard.
After all the hype surrounding Star Trek: Picard recently, fans are hoping that the “Star Trek Universe” panel on Saturday will provide information as to when the series will finally air. But in the meantime, NYCC attendees learned some new details about Picard’s show from a display at the Star Trek Universe booth on the show floor (booth #166).
In addition to showcasing some of the costumes we’ll get to see when the series finally airs, the booth also had a number of placards on display — and these revealed new plot and character details, including the fact that Picard will go from a recluse back to the captain of a Starfleet over the course of its run, and that Seven of Nine will play a fairly prominent role. It’s a clever way to hint at what’s to come, and this likely isn’t all Star Trek has in store for fans at NYCC.
