This year’s Emmy Awards had quite a few surprises in store this year, but the two biggest winners of the evening weren’t all that shocking.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards was full of surprises, but when it came to the winners for the best series categories, the outcome wasn’t all that shocking. After winning Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Fleabag also took home the award for Best Comedy Series, while Game of Thrones managed to win Best Drama Series.

It’s true that many initially anticipated a win for Veep when it came to Best Comedy Series, but as the night continued, it became clear that Fleabag was favored for several of the evening’s prizes. In addition to the show winning Best Comedy Series, lead actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, proving that Fleabag has plenty to offer in terms of quality.

On the drama end, Game of Thrones only won 12 awards this year, most of which were Creative Arts Emmys — despite having snagged a total of 32 nominations. Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were both passed up for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series, respectively, and none of the ladies nominated for Best Supporting Actress took home Emmy gold either. Peter Dinklage was the only Game of Thrones actor to win this evening, landing himself the award for Best Supporting Actor and cementing his fourth Emmy win for his performance as Tyrion Lannister.

Still, even with Dinklage being the only Game of Thrones star to win an award, it seemed inevitable that the HBO series would take home the night’s biggest honor for its eighth and final season — much to the chagrin of some viewers who felt that the most recent episodes weren’t worthy of such recognition, especially when pitted against series like Killing Eve, Ozark, Better Call Saul, and This Is Us.

But whether you enjoyed the most recent season or not, it’s only fitting for a huge series like Game of Thrones to go out with a bang, and winning the biggest award of the evening certainly qualifies. In fact, it’s more shocking that it didn’t have more wins to boast of (though it’s always nice to see less regularly recognized series in the spotlight, too).
