Did Jordan Peele’s Us unnerve you to the bone? At this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, each dark, twisting turn will have you questioning what you see.

Do you trust your eyes? At this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, Jordan Peele’s Us unleashes a new, terrifying maze that could have you questioning who the real enemy is. Are you brave enough to unearth this other reality?

The idea of a doppelgänger has always fascinated people. Is there a person out there who could be your double in every way, shape, and form? While this idea might not be tied to reality, the concept can play on a person’s deepest, darkest fears.

For many people, Jordan Peele’s Us had them constantly looking over their shoulder long after the movie credits ended. The idea that a red-cladded doppelgänger could be lurking was almost too real to shake from their memories. Now, Halloween Horror Nights is bringing that nightmare to life.

Borrowing scenes and themes from the movie, this new maze will feature a “labyrinth of underground tunnels.” With each step, guests will have to face the fear of the enemy within.

Given that the movie begins at a mirror funhouse, this aspect to the HHN maze should disorient guests. Whether you cannot determine the right path or you must see a different version of yourself, that concept heightens the fear.

As guests meet the tethered doppelgänger, they will question who is evil and who is trapped. In the end, will The Tethered succeed in their rebellion? Only the truly brave will find a way out of this treacherous tunnel.

“It’s very exciting to know that fans of Us will get to experience firsthand the terror of being stalked and tormented by ‘The Tethered,'” said Jordan Peele. “It’s been a lifelong ambition of mine to create a monster that would scare people on Halloween, so having ‘The Tethered’ join such esteemed company is a dream come true.”

This type of HHN maze shows how the event is changing from the gory and guts to the psychological thriller. Just like last year’s concept of “We know what scares you,” this type of experience lasts far longer than the sore throat from screaming.

Similar to innate fears, this movie and this storyline plays with one’s physche. While everyone knows that it is make-believe, the slight tie to reality drives home the fear. What if you saw someone who looked just like you in the parking lot on your way out? It could happen.

Some people, including myself, guessed that Us would be a theme for this year. Considering that this movie is both a Blumhouse and Universal production, it seemed like a good guess. Also, it is a new-ish film that many people would be excited to see transformed into real life.

In many ways, this theme works with the other haunted houses already announced. From the original pieces to the new Stranger Things house, overall there is good balance to the various experiences. Although Universal hasn’t necessarily stated an overall theme, there seems to be an experience for all types of HHN fans.

The Us haunted maze will be part of both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights. The Orlando event begins September 6, and the Hollywood event begins on September 13. The event is separately ticketed.
