Kevin Feige says MCU X-Men will be different, and consider our interest piqued

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige shared some vague comments about the MCU’s future interpretation of the X-Men. Needless to say, we’re intrigued.

Phase 4 of the MCU is stacked with content. From Disney+ shows to new films, reboots, and sequels, comic book movie fans have a lot to look forward to. After SDCC especially, everyone’s excited for Thor 4, Blade, the Eternals, and basically everything else Marvel sends our way.

And biases aside, we have mutants on our minds — the mutants of the X-Men universe to be specific. After a brief interview with IGN, Kevin Feige has some promising and mildly concerning hints about the MCU’s interpretation of the X-Men.

Following a conglomeration of hype during the SDCC Marvel Studios Panel, Kevin Feige spoke with Terri Schwarts at IGN. Regarding his on-stage word choice of “mutants,” Feige explained:

"“‘Mutants’ and ‘X-Men’ are interchangeable. I just said ‘mutants.’ But yes, whatever we do will be quite different from what’s been done before.”"

Although the X-Men might be the only mutants the MCU showcases for awhile, mutants and X-Men aren’t actually interchangeable. Sorry, Mr. Feige, but a lot of mutants aren’t X-Men. While various X-related teams house basically hundreds of X-Gene-carrying heroes, even the X-Mansion can accommodate for every mutant.

Semantics aside, the “different” approach to X-narratives is deviously vague. There are still a lot of X-Men we haven’t seen, dozens of iconic arcs that haven’t been fleshed out, and nearly countless ways the team — and mutants overall  —could weave themselves into the preestablished MCU.

Seeing as Phase 4 will be about new beginnings — and given some of the devasting endings in Avengers: Endgame — we’ll hopefully see some entirely new faces we haven’t seen in the various X-reboots.

As a team that heavily focuses on Charles and Magneto’s shenanigans, the MCU’s version of the team could introduce a new leader of the team entirely. Since Professor X isn’t the only person who has led the team — along with enough timeline meandering to make Barry Allen proud — virtually anything is possible.

We still have a few years left to wait before we see any form of the team in the MCU; however, SDCC was abuzz with X-news. The future of X-Men comics is going to keep us busy for a while, according to Polygon. With House of X, Marauders, Excalibur, New Mutants, Fallen Angels, and X-Force,  Marvel Comics is keeping our passion for X-related-mutants alive.
