Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: What will Deke’s return bring to SHIELD?

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD brought Deke Shaw back into the fold in present day. So what exactly does Deke have to offer the team this time?

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has had two relatively lighthearted episodes in a row. While they didn’t necessarily land perfectly, it’s a change of pace for the darker-focused show.

In last week’s episode, we discovered that Deke Shaw is alive and well in the current timeline. And doing pretty well for himself! But of course, he wasn’t left to his own devices–SHIELD had an agent placed on him in his inner circle.

It makes sense, as Deke knows a little too much for his own good and a lot that would get him thrown into the loony bin.

By the end of the episode, he’s back with Mack in SHIELD territory.

So… what exactly will Deke Shaw’s return offer the Agents of SHIELD?

For starters, he has a solid amount of knowledge regarding space travel since, you know, he grew up in space and with aliens and the such. No one has yet told him that Daisy and his grandmother, Simmons, are somewhere out in deep space looking for his grandfather.

It’s quite possible that he’ll know (or come up with) a way to help them get back–if they can’t make it–or find a way to contact them from Earth. Knowing his crush Daisy is out in space may make him spring into action and try to actually become a SHIELD agent to help out.

Honestly, outside of that, I’m not sure what more Deke can really offer SHIELD. Will a familiar face help rally the troops? Probably not, as he’s not a familiar face from a fun time. Especially with what just happened with Keller back at HQ.

It’s probably not going to be a fun time coming back for Deke, but when has Agents of SHIELD made anything easy for its characters?

Will Deke want to stick around just to potentially see Daisy if she ever makes it back from Earth? Or will he want to return to his lighthearted, fun life that doesn’t remind him of the life he left behind?
