5 Sony games we want adapted to film or TV shows

With Sony now devoting itself seriously to adaptations of its properties, these five games seem like prime opportunities for movies and TV.

With video game publishers like Nintendo moving into movie production in partnership with Illumination, today’s announcement from Sony that PlayStation Productions now exists and is working to put game adaptations on both TV and the silver screen isn’t much of a surprise.

Of course, the announcement didn’t come with much in the way of hints as to what games are actually being developed, so that leaves it to us. We excluded both The Last of Us and Uncharted from this list, because they’ve been announced as getting the movie treatment. This is for newcomers to the TV and film world, with games published by Sony.

Detroit: Become Human

Can anyone say anthology series with this one? Detroit: Become Human follows three characters already in the main game, with their stories weaving in and out. Become Human could even become the name of the series, with a different city every season and more stories of androids trying to figure out what it means to even do that — or if they want to do that at all.

Until Dawn

Until Dawn is a contained enough game that this could become a movie, with The Inpatient also providing a natural springboard for more movies in the same universe. Low- or mid-budget horror films, if well-done, can do really well at the box office (hey there, Get Out and Us), and Until Dawn had some serious word-of-mouth thanks to the support of YouTubers. Who’s to say all of that wouldn’t come flooding back if Until Dawn were to become a film?

The Order: 1886

The Order: 1886 deserved better, and its aesthetic would do really well in a series in the vein of Penny Dreadful. It doesn’t even have to adapt the events of the game one-to-one, perhaps changing a few events around. With sci-fi and fantasy more popular on TV than ever before, this one might have to wait a bit if it wants to really make an impact instead of getting lost — but we think the wait would be worth it.

Horizon Zero Dawn

If Horizon Zero Dawn were to get the movie treatment, it’d probably take a few movies to even tell the story of the game, because it’s just that big. There’s no doubt that this would be one of those big-budget film efforts, but it might very well be worth it. Sure, Game of Thrones has proven that you can adapt something sprawling to TV. However, it’s hard to argue that Aloy’s world wouldn’t be really well-served by all the trappings that come with a film adaptation.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne is probably the hardest game on this list to adapt, because its main character is created by you, the player. However, comics like The Death of Sleep have already proven that Bloodborne is adaptable to different mediums. Would it be a TV series? A movie? Why not both? Like The Order: 1886, this one might have to wait to make the maximum impact, but we think it’s probably even more worth it than The Order to wait.
