Game of Thrones: Twitter reacts to Battle of Winterfell’s death toll
By Mia Johnson
Game of Thrones fans got to see one of the most anticipated battles unfold in before their eyes on Sunday, and the internet could not contain themselves when it came to those we lost.
Warning: This article contains Game of Thrones spoilers.
Things were certainly tense Sunday night as Game of Thrones‘ Battle of Winterfell finally commenced. There was barely a moment to breathe during the third episode of the eighth season, and Twitter was about a lit up as the Dothraki’s swords during the show.
As most battles go, there were a fair amount of deaths — and deaths of those quite significant to the show. (Suffice to say, if you made it to this final season, you were quite significant to the series anyway.)
Things started out not fairly easy on us with the death of Eddison Tollett, and then things were cranked up to maximum overdrive later, giving us casualties like Lyanna Mormont and Theon Greyjoy. Here’s how Twitter reacted to each person’s death through the night.
Edd
The show started out light with Edd’s death. Though it was sad, there was just so much going on at once that fans hardly had the chance to stop and properly mourn.
Beric
The same went for Beric, though we all saluted him for serving his final purpose and dying nobly.
Lyanna
Lyanna, though young, fought for herself! That giant had nothing on her, and young Lyanna gave it her all.
Jorah
Poor Joarh. He died at Daenerys’ side while Daenerys… tried to put up a fight. Fans will certainly miss Jorah Mormont, as will Daenerys, we’re sure. That scene of her crying over him as Drogon wraps his dragon body around them both — hand them all the Emmys, please!
Theon
Talk about the ultimate redemption arc. Theon came a long way, and fans noticed that throughout the night. Bran (who cared about absolutely nothing during this whole battle) called Theon a good man, and fans were all over how he was able to die happy.
Melisandre
Melisandre predicted her own death at the beginning of the episode, so we pretty much all saw this coming. For a character like her, Twitter was able to throw in a few jokes — only to deal with the grief, we assume.
The Night King
Honestly, goodbye and good riddance, Night King! Twitter surprisingly wasn’t so alarmed that the Night King is dead this early on, but rather more they were more excited for Arya to be on her A-game this episode. Yes, she killed the Night King and Westeros is saved, all thanks to her.
Next week, we’ll have to see how the characters (and Twitter) move on from the deaths in the Battle of Winterfell. They will be missed (aside from the Night King), but the show must go on.
Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
