Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger review: Parallel journeys

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger separates our two heroes this episode while they take parallel journeys, Tyrone with his mom, Tandy with Mayhem.

This week’s Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger teams up Tandy with Mayhem, and Tyrone with his mom. One of those works well, the other one… not so much.

Tandy and Tyrone are in the aftermath of him absorbing Mayhem. They’re trying to figure out where Mayhem (and Connors) have gone. Tandy’s frustrated by the fact that Tyrone could have gotten himself out of his current situation if he could just bring them back from the Darkforce dimension.

Tandy volunteers to go in. This happens at the same time as most of the guys from the secret hideout recognize a wanted photo of Tyrone hanging in the precinct. They don’t know where he is, but there is an address on file.

Honestly, most of the stuff with Tyrone’s mom feels forced and unnecessary. There’s a little too much talk about not being a kid anymore, dangerous situations, et cetera. It doesn’t come natural, like a mother’s concern, and maybe it’s because Tyrone’s hardened over the last year on the run.

Unfortunately, where he and his mom are hiding out, they get found. It’s the kid Tyrone saved last episode. Tyrone calls Brigid, who informs the cops. It’s time to turn himself in, since he can’t jump away.

In the Darkforce dimension, Tandy comes across fun size Tyrone, who’s basically the gatekeeper of the place. She has to turn in her light daggers to continue and gets a coin—one side is her dagger, the other side is Tyrone’s cloak.

She finds Mayhem immediately and explains that the only way out is with Tandy.

The Darkforce dimension is kind of fun. My favorite thing is the mirrors that show different versions of someone. We get to see a bunch of different possibilities for Tandy.

Guess what? They find Connors’ hideout! And he seems to have a link to the missing girls (in the form of vinyls). We get a little bit of insight into Mayhem’s thought process and feelings about everything and her passion for this case against the missing girls.

Oh, and then Mayhem tries to kill Connors. Tandy breaks the rules, uses her light daggers, and they all get swept back to Tyrone’s church.

Connors included.

Badass Moment of the Week

Mayhem straight-up hanging Connors was vindictive, but it was even better when he apologized and she replied with, “I don’t care.”

Best One-Liner

I’m going to go with a silly one—the slow, acoustic, serious version of “Hit Me Baby One More Time.

Honestly, the soundtrack for these episodes is very on point. I get Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse vibes from it. Aside from the vinyl scenes, of course. Those are perfectly heartbreaking.

Next week, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has to compete with early showings of Avengers: Endgame. It also looks like Tyrone’s going to lose his crap against Connors. It’s going to be great.
