5 reasons why we’re still obsessed with Crazy Rich Asians
We admit we are still obsessed with Crazy Rich Asians and for good reason! From magical moments to an amazing cast, here are the 5 reasons we are fans.
The Fandom 250 rankings are here! From film and television to comics and video games, if there is a fandom behind it, we’ve ranked it.
And while it may be in the very last spot in number 250, Crazy Rich Asians has shown the world that even a romantic comedy can have a solid fandom.
From a best-selling novel (there is an entire trilogy of stories to enjoy) to a record-breaking movie, Crazy Rich Asians has a passionate following for many reasons, from the cast to the storyline. Having the book turned into a movie definitely helped bolster its fan base, and thanks to a delightful cast, it’s become one of the most enjoyable movies this year.
Crazy Rich Asians may be at #250 this year but it could easily climb the ranks in 2019. Not only do we have a sequel to look forward to, but as fans, we continue to watch it over and over again, convincing others that they have to see the movie for themselves.
And why are we so obsessed? Well, let us count the ways…
The wedding scene
If you have seen Crazy Rich Asians you know exactly what I am talking about!. In the movie theater, my best friend and I had tears in our eyes as “Can’t Help Falling in Love” sung by Kina Grannis (yes it is on our playlist) began to filter through the audience. We watched as our leading lady and leading man connected (and this wasn’t even their wedding) in a way that proved beyond any doubt that they were truly in love.
And then that beautiful moment when water filled the aisle and the bride began her elegant walk towards her groom, barefoot yet seemingly walking on water, our hearts melted. (Maybe it’s just us but we started planning our imaginary weddings complete with water lilies, a canopy, and water-filled aisle.)
Sure, we’ve seen wedding scenes before in rom-coms, but nothing quite compares to the magic and elegance of what we saw in Crazy Rich Asians. And every time we have watched it since, our breath catches all over again as we are transported into that sweet moment.
The cast
Everything about the cast was perfection. It is the first modern film with an all-Asian cast and an Asian-American lead in 25 years. From Henry Golding gaining international attention, to Awkwafina giving us so much humor and even wisdom, and of course Constance Wu of Fresh Off the Boat, the cast is jam-packed with talent.
We can’t imagine any other cast making this story work better. In fact, we would love to have Rachel Chu or Goh Peik Lin (Wu and Awkwafina respectively) as our friends, helping us with our love lives and inspiring us to be better people.
The setting
Is there anything more beautiful than the scenery we saw in Crazy Rich Asians? From the Singapore skyline, to the beautiful beaches and impressive mansions that are palaces in their own right, every setting in this movie is as important as the romance itself.
Every time we watch, we instantly wish we were there, indulging in luxurious meals, wandering the city, visiting the bustling street market, or just relaxing on the beach. Every single place we saw was spectacular, and if we could drop everything and travel the world, we know Singapore would have to be our first stop.
As fans of the film, we know the incredible scenery is one reason we can’t stop watching over and over again. (And since there is already a sequel in the works, we bet the setting will reel us back in once again.)
The music
The fact that Crazy Rich Asians offered both American and Chinese music was creatively on point and fascinating for those of us who have yet to listen to the mix of Chinese artists on the soundtrack. The film is all about representation, and while the cast and even the setting gave that to us, nothing cemented it more than the opening music. Hearing “Waiting for Your Return” covered by Jasmine Chen done in Mandarin was goosebump-inspiring.
And as we mentioned before during the wedding scene, there was “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” which moved us to tears. Music is such a powerful way to connect people to a film’s story and Crazy Rich Asians did this effortlessly.
The dumpling scene
Our final memorable reason for loving Crazy Rich Asians has to be this scene. Amidst the glitz and glamour, we see a laid-back moment for the Young family. Rachel sees firsthand how this family works hard to keep their history and heritage alive.
It was also a chance to learn more about everyone from the matriarch of the family to Rachel herself. No matter who you are, it feels like a reminder of being young and prepping meals with grandma while listening to old family tales. (Hopefully, with less tension though between each other — as we witness between Rachel and Eleanor.)
And maybe it’s just us, but now we want to learn how to make dumplings and create those perfect pouches. We want to sit around with our family and friends and learn about each other’s culture. Basically, we want to recreate this scene for ourselves!
