Dancing with the Stars season 27 finale: Watch online
Who will win the Mirrorball Trophy on this season of Dancing with the Stars? Two rounds over two hours remain until we find out.
With Juan Pablo Di Pace eliminated in last week’s episode, Dancing with the Stars has a much more open finale going into tonight. Although there are three pretty clear possibilities for winner, there’s a spoiler in the form of Bobby Bones, who has never even been in jeopardy. That speaks of a really strong fandom, which might spell trouble for Evanna Lynch, Milo Manheim, or Alexis Ren and their respective partners.
Scores still do apparently matter, though, so one of those three is still more likely to win (although yours truly has Milo most likely to win just based on how darn likeable he is) than Bobby, but it could still be anyone’s game. Our question is about what the judges may say if they don’t agree with the win, after perhaps their biggest protest in several seasons after last week’s elimination.
Moreover, tonight’s episode won’t just be filler. There are two rounds of dancing. First up, we’ll have to get through what ABC calls the “repeat performance” section in its press release.
Cha Cha
"Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess: “U Can’t Touch This,” MC Hammer"
The press release pointedly says that this is supposed to be about bringing back “best dances” for each couple through the season. I’m just putting this out there.
Charleston
"Milo Manheim and Witney Carson: “Living in New York City,” Robin Thicke (live)"
See, this makes sense! This Charleston was Milo’s arrival in the competition.
Tango
"Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten: “Swan Lake,” Ray Chew LiveEvanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe: “Disturbia,” Rihanna"
This is the only head-to-head part of this round of competition, and both of these tangos, even as they struck very different notes, came from early in the competition … but the “Disturbia” tango did produce a pair of 10s, so the expectations might be a touch higher there by virtue of how impressive it already was.
Then we come to the freestyle round. From that same press release, we get the songs, and it looks like some are going for the slower, emotional approach as opposed to the showstopper.
"Alexis and Alan: “Head Above Water,” Avril Lavigne (live)Bobby and Sharna: “The Greatest Show,” Panic! at the DiscoEvanna and Keo: “It’s Oh So Quiet,” BjörkMilo and Witney: “Ain’t No Sunshine (Lido Remix),” Bill Withers"
At first glance, “Ain’t No Sunshine” looks like the weirdest song choice, but let’s face it: Milo and Witney have done well with weird. (“Toxic,” anyone?) In fact, you could argue that there are four approaches here. Alexis and Alan have the most emotional song; “The Greatest Show” reflects that Bobby entertains even if he’s not always the best; “It’s Oh So Quiet” has a sort of old-fashioned note to it that suits Evanna’s dancing.
