Here’s the story behind Tom Hiddleston’s cryptic ‘Betrayal’ tweet

Tom Hiddleston, or his PR team on his behalf, tweeted an ominous minute-long video yesterday, and we’ve decoded it.

The formerly inactive Twitter user and actor Tom Hiddleston surprised us yesterday with another ambiguous tweet. Like his little note last week, where he announced the return of Loki after Disney+ confirmed an untitled Loki series, his text-free Tweet on Wednesday, Nov. 14 was less than concrete. Nevertheless, we have the rundown on Hiddleston’s cryptic, minute-long “Betrayal” video.

With its brevity, the clip still gave us a pinnacle of emotions and questions. Why is Tom Hiddleston walking down a long tunnel? Why is he crying? Who hurt him? Also, will he ever accept a role that doesn’t make us sob? Most of all, we’re wondering what this video means.

We might not have all the answers to these questions, but we at least know what Hiddleston’s “Betrayal” video is promoting: Harold Pinter’s play, Betrayal.

According to The Guardian, Hiddleston will portray a leading character, Robert, in Pinter’s play. Unfortunately, the performance won’t be adapted for the small or large screen. His next role will be adapted for The Jamie Lloyd Company’s Pinter at the Pinter, Time Out London reports.

As Pinter at the Pinter notes, the play will debut on March 5, 2019 and run for 12 weeks at the London Harold Pinter Theatre. Not all of us are fortunate enough to live in London and enjoy the theater scene, but the Pinter-themed play season has us toggling that plane ticket to the city.

If you’re unfamiliar with Pinter’s works or the Betrayal narrative in general, you might want to pack some tissues if you plan on seeing this one-act play. The piece follows Robert after he’s discovered his wife, Emma, cheated on him with his best friend, Jerry. As the title denotes, the play explores Robert as he copes with this deception and heartache.

Prior to The Jamie Lloyd Company updating its event lineup, Hiddleston and Loki fans alike had some interesting speculations about the video. Although many stans turned directly to fan theories, others quickly transformed the ending frame of the video into a meme (after all, it would be a missed opportunity if they didn’t).

Marvel fans are used to moonlighting as professional investigators for the sake of decoding Easter eggs and trailers, especially when it comes to Schrödinger’s cat of the MCU: Loki. While Tom Hiddleston’s tweet isn’t related to the trickster, the extravagant Betrayal teaser only parallels Pinter’s intricate, and emotional, play.
